when to get engagment pictures taken?

I have been engaged for a month and I would like to know when are you suppose to get engagment pictures taken? We are doing a december wedding and I am clueless about this stuff so any help would be appreciated!

You can do them whenever you want before the wedding, but it's a good idea to wait until you know who your wedding photographer is going to be, because they often do package deals that include ephotos. And because it lets you do a test run.

I don't think there's a set time to have them done, per se, but most people I know take them within 6 months or so of the wedding. We did ours 3 months before our wedding, for the exact reason calliopeia said. We used our e-session to get to know our photographers and get used to them taking pictures of us.

Whenever you want! My FI & I got engaged December 2011, we will be having our engagement photos done September 2012 & getting married April 2013

We are getting ours done 3 months before the wedding. I had wanted to do them a little earlier but the weather would not have been nice enough.

Since we are having such a long engagement (2.5 years) we are wanting to get ours done within the next month or two; we got engaged February 29th.
We are also getting them done for free by a friend who is a professional photographer so we don't really need to wait to have the session included with our wedding photographer.
Do them whenever you want but I think it's pretty typical to do them within 6 months of the wedding (I'm not really sure why though aside from the wedding photographer/price thing)

Whenever you want! We got engaged new years 2011, march 2012 had our engagement pics taken, and we're not getting married until sept 2013!! Helpful hint: try to find a photographer who gives you your prints on a CD... it gets very expensive paying per print. Best wishes & congrats!

We had H's sister take them (she is a professional photographer). We did ours 10-11 months before the wedding because we wanted to do them during fall.

Well I don't know when you're really supposed to get them done but we are only having a 7.5 week engagement. We got our engagement photos done last weekend so we can put an official announcement is the local papers and our wedding is June 23, 2012.

I agree with pp's. You can have them done whenever you want!. FI and I got engaged back in December 2011 and since our wedding is in July of 2013 we wanted happy, festive engagement pictures. We actually just got back earlier today from a local amusement park where we had THEE best time! We booked our photographer back in February and wanted the weather to be warmer for our pics. Today was an amazingly beautiful day..I'm itching to see the pics.
Back to your question though..do whatever feels right. Lots of couples wait till just a few months after they get engaged and others like to wait due to weather, funds etc...
