Getting in Shape

Two Weeks til I buy My Dress, and I've gotten no where!

My wedding is in nine months, and I'm going to order my dress in two weeks. I have been trying to lose weight because I gained a lot after christmas. So I joined weight watchers and I started exercising, but I don't seem to be getting anywhere at all! I am so disheartened and I have no motivation anymore. What am I going to do? Am I doing the wrong exercises? I would love to have some bride to bride advice.

Re: Two Weeks til I buy My Dress, and I've gotten no where!

  • We need way more advice.  How many points do you have, and how many are you eating every day?  Are you being really honest with your tracking and your estimation for exercise?  Are you eating back exercise points?  How many of your weekly points are you eating?

WW works really well for some people, but it's been my experience that the less weight you have to lose, the less it works.  When I got down close to my goal weight, I stopped losing on WW, and I started losing again when I went into maintenance, because WW didn't allow me to eat ENOUGH.

What kinds of foods are you eating?  If you're putting crap in, expect to get crap out.

  • And also?  There's no such thing as "the wrong exercises" unless you're doings incorrectly to put you at a high risk for injury.  Any exercise is better than no exercise.

If you're truly doing everything right and still not losing, it's time to see a doctor.  There are many medications and other issues that can affect weight gain and loss.

  • Definitely need more info. How much are you eating? What is your weight loss goal? Do you measure yourself? What are you doing for exercise? Are you eating back the calories you burn from exercising? How often are you working out?

I dont do WW but I calorie count with myfitnesspal. I know people who have had success with WW but like J&K said the less weight you have to lose, the less it works. Are you really tracking every single thing that you eat? That means every thing you take a bite of. You don't realize how fast that stuff adds up.

For kicks I would download a calorie counter like my fitness pal or spark people and really see how much you are eating and see what they tell you in regards to how many calories you need to net to lose 1lb a week. Like J&K said, I'm betting its less than what WW is telling you.

  • emaemarsh, don't be discouraged (that's the quickest way to stop trying).  I don't know what the specifics of your plan are, but I've heard of people going both ways with WW (losing weight and not losing weight).  If you really feel like you should be losing based on how your eating and activity habits have changed, but the scale is saying you're not, take a look in the mirror.  With exercising, you should be toning and gaining muscle mass, which weighs more than fat.  Even if your weight is maintaining, that most likely means you are losing some fat at least as you replace with muscle.  If you are not already, you might want to consider using a body tape measure in addition to weighing - while weighing does give you an absolute sense of weight loss, the scale is finicky (eg., I drop almost 2 pounds in any given workout because of sweating!).  A tape measure will help to detect chang without the variability of a scale, and eventually you will learn how many inches of lost waist equates to how many pounds of lost weight.  Also, I don't know how long you have been on WW, but it can take up to a few weeks for weight loss to kick in on any new regimen, so you may still be in a lull before you start losing.
  • PrincessJas, if you're dropping two pounds from sweat during a workout, you should seriously consider drinking more water while you work out.  That's a lot of dehydration.

  • As someone that has done both versions of weight watchers, I personally find that the "old" system works far better for me than the "new" system. That being said, I find the main reason I personally don't lose weight on either program is that I get lenient with my points. I stop measuring portions. Eyeballing things is about the WORST you can do. Really evaluate how honest you're being with your points. It may make you feel better to put that you only went over your daily allowance by 2 points, but in reality you may have gone over by 5 or 6.

Also, be sure to eat back some of your fitness points if you're working out heavily! Your body needs energy to function and if you're not providing it with what it needs, you weight will not budge.

I've been doing the "old" program again for about 20 weeks now. In that time, I've managed to lose almost 20 pounds by just changing my diet alone. I personally found it easier to focus on changing my eating habits first, then incorporating exercise later down the road. I feel taking on too much at once can get very overwhelming and caused me to stray from my plan.

As for dress shopping...my wedding is October of this year and I went shopping (and ordered my dress) in December of 2011. Since I ordered my dress, I've lost close to 20 pounds. I bought my dress in the size I needed at the time just incase my grand plan to lose weight fell through. If you lose weight, something can always be done to alter the dress Smile

  • Easy to alter a dress down for the most part.... But darn near impossible to alter a dress up more than maybe one size.

  • I ordered my dress big because I needed it to zip and even if I contiue to lose weight my rib cage isn't going anywhere. I too have a hard time staying motivated so I am constanly switching it up. I have Zumba and  Brazilian butt lift which i LOVE! I also have pilatis and hip hop abs. I know there is no way I would be motivated to do a 60 day program of the same exersicses so I'm constanly switching around. Also I print off weight lift exercises and keep them in a binder so I can do different things. As long as I am moving I am proud of myself and I know I'm better off than if I was sitting on the couch. Try to stay focused on your end goal. Good luck!
