How does the traditional "cake cutting" work with a  cupcake cake?

Does the B & G cut into a cupcake? Do they get a cake top tier and cut into that? What if they want to save it for their 1st anniversary?

    You could order a small cake for the actual cutting if you wanted.  We had cupcakes for our wedding and didn't actually cut anything.  We just posed with a cupcake for a photo.

    We had cupcakes, what we did was have a very small two tiered  that we cut into. Here's a photo of our cupcakes
