H, DS, and I are at a day long, day of reflection thing for the retreat we're involved with. My uncle was supposed to come along, but never showed. NBD. The day ended with Mass, which started at 5:00. Halfway through mass uncle shows up. Turns out all he heard was "Mass starts at 5 or 5:30" Again NBD.
Uncle sits next to us, then two minutes later he darts to the back of the hall. I figured he was going to get DS who was being held by a friend. I watch uncle dart to the back, right past my son, then pick up another woman's son who was crawling on the floor. I look away, confused, not sure I'm really seeing what's happening. H leans over to me and whispers, "That's not our baby." I lose it.
H turns to look at friend holding DS and motions frantically, "TELL HIM! TELL HIM"
Friend can barely get the words out through her laughter, "This is A!"
Uncle looks her, then the baby he's holding, says "NAH"
He looks again, touches the baby's face, looks at friend again, then says, "I thought he felt lighter."
H and I know the other mom. She was a good sport about the whole thing.
H was able to laugh about it, but he'd look at my uncle and shake his head with a look of, "You are so dumb. Really really dumb. For real."
MIL is thrilled you're joining the family.
