Register for Duplicates

We have guests coming from all over the country and we have registered at three stores. I am honestly not sure at all who will shop where, or if most will go to one particular store, so would it be a bad idea to register for duplicates (one of something on each registry) and then just delete them from the others if I see they have been purchased? Has anyone done this? How did it work out?

I think it's fine to do after your showers - then if you get duplicates you can quietly return them. But overall, I would avoid doing this except for maybe one or two items that are your must-haves (like the KA stand mixer or a set of pots and pans).

I would avoid this. I had a friend who did this, and she had to make so many returns. She thought she would be able to keep an eye on the registries and delete the duplicates, but she didn't have enough time, and by the time everything was done was only able to delete a couple of the duplicates before they were purchased and then spent hours on returns.

As PP said, it's okay to duplicate a couple of the things you really want, but I know that if a store isn't close to me, I still check the registry online and will then check a store close to me and see if they have the same product available if I really want to get it for the couple.

We're in the same situation, everyone is from all over the country, so we registered at Macy's, BB&B, and WIlliams Sonoma. At least one of those stores is accessible to all the guests. We've started getting gifts, and Macy's is by far the most popular place to shop, so I've moved the majority of items that are also available there to the Macy's registry from the others.
  • I would try to avoid this as well. Like pp said you will spend hours returning everything if you cant keep on top of the registerys

I too thought I would be able to keep track of it and I have already gotten myself in quite a pickle, so I would avoid this. I registered at BBB, Kohls and Target. I really wanted a Pyrex set and a set of nice Corningware servingwear and it was ALOT cheaper at Target so that was where I registered for it. 2 weekends ago I had my first shower and i would say 95% of my gifts came from BBB. I figured since the 2 main things I wanted from Target were those items I would add them to my BBB registery since that one was getting depleted, and then I would check back on it. My second and last shower is this next Saturday, so I checked on my registeries this morning and WOULDN"T you know, I will be opening TWO corningware sets and TWO pyrex sets, one from BBB and one from Target. I'll try to make it out to be the online registiries fault but I am just glad that I only did it with these items and not anymore than this. At this point I wish I would have just left it up to chance. If you get some things that werrn't on your high priority list you can return items and use the credit for one of your must haves. Good luck!

  • This is how I ended up with 28 wine glasses. I'd maybe limit the doubling up to things like sheets and towels that don't take up a lot of space.

[QUOTE]In Response to Register for Duplicates : I didn't do this but I really don't think it's necessary. I would be too nervous about people buying the from two stores at the exact same time and then opening them both at the shower or something. I would just pick one store, maybe whichever store has it cheaper.

This is exactly what we did for BBB and Target. As we found something we liked at BBB, we pulled up the T website to see what the price was and we chose the store that had the better price. There were a couple of items that we went with BBB regardless of the cheaper price being at T because it was an "online only" item at T and we didn't want anyone to have to pay for shipping.

OP- the other thing to keep in mind is that while right now you might be able to keep up with what's being purchased from your registry and delete the duplicate on the other, some guests might not shop until the night before or even the day of (depending on the time of the shower/wedding). It's possible that you would still end up with duplicates from different stores. I would just put items on the registries as if you were spending your own money, choosing the stores based on the best deal.

  • Do not do this if you're having a shower. You don't want to open the exact same gift twice. This happens even when there's no duplicates between the registries (and for things like place settings of china), but to half-plan on it is not good and really could make your guests feel bad. [And I generally think theknot thinks guests have much thinner skins than most guests have]

As for the warnings about keeping track and returns, to me that has to do with how you go about returns and how much space you have. If you have space to store duplicate gifts until after the honeymoon, you can just keep them all and make one, big returns trip to each store. If you don't have the space, I guess I agree with PPs.

[For some stores, even with a registry and a gift receipt, you can't wait more than like 90 days after purchase to return the gift. So you shouldn't wait to return very early gifts. But I assume you won't be busy so far before the wedding.]
  • I do not recommend this.

When we registered, we went to BBB one weekend and registered for a toaster over. The next weekend we went to Macy's and found one that we liked more so we put it on their registry. When we got home and opened BBB to remove it from that list, it was already purchased. We had just started registering and hadn't even told anyone yet. People are quick.
