Mermaid dresses

Hi ladies,

My gown is a mermaid style dress, but I don't want to wear the puffy crinoline underneath it...I just want it to naturally fall nicely without puffing too much at the bottom. My dress consultant told me that either way I'll have to wear a slip or something underneath it, so that my knees don't poke through underneath the dress. Is this true? Did all of you wear a slip/crinoline or something underneath? My wedding is also in the summer, so I don't want too much underneath and be sweating all night hah! And I don't wanna spend unneccesary money. I'm just not sure if my consultant was just trying to make a buck or if she was being legit.

I wanted to get rid of the crinoline under mine, and she said removing one layer would be doable but removing both would ruin the effect of the dress.

I'm not sure since I haven't done anything yet. I may just leave it.

See how it looks without the slip. Move around in it. Personally, I'm inclined to think your consultant just wants more commission.

What material is your dress? The skirt of mine is chiffon (it's A-line, though, not mermaid) with 2 layers underneath, and the seamstress and the consultant when I bought the dress said I could take out one layer of crinoline. The seamstress took out the layer of just crinoline, so there's still a layer of slip with crinoline at the bottom, and it looks great--more flowy/less pouffy, but the chiffon skirt doesn't cling to my knees or anything. When I was picking out the dress, the consultant had me stuff the crinoline between my legs to get an idea of how it would look without both layers.

ETA: I would talk to a seamstress about your question to get another opinion from someone with experience who can see how the dress works with your body.

It just depends on the look you want. I wanted a crazy bell flare at the bottom so I got a crinny with 2 layers that only flared at my shins. I would definitely try your dress without the crinny and decide. You can always buy it somewhere other than your dress shop, after consulting with a seamstress. I would say the material of your dress and the shape it inherently holds also affects your decision.

my dress is in between a trumpet and mermaid style, and I don't need a slip at all (although I'm wearing spankys :P sseeeexxyy )
I want to take out a layer of the poof on mine too, although I haven't yet. I would tend to agree that if there are multiple layers, take one off at a time to see what you think.. don't just go for it all at once! />_< I think one layer would be reasonable to give the affect, but taking it all out might leave the dress looking a little lifeless and flat.
I agree that it sounds like your consultant just wants more commission though...

Without seeing the dress and the layers under it I can't say if she wants a sale or if her concern is legit. With a mermaid the point is for the bottom to poof out and without a slip underneath you lose a lot of poof. Have you tried it on with and without to see the difference?

I think she is trying to make a dollar.

Here is my dress. It's a mermaid style with nothing under except it has a built in corset at the top for the boobies

. It is very light, made of satin. Many people do not wear slips under. That is considered old fashioned. I have a mid summer wedding too and I want to be comfortable!

My dress is a trumpet/fit and flare type style and i don't plan to wear anything underneath because I don't want to have to deal with all the stuff under there. It doesn't have anything under it already which is why I liked it, so I don't plan to ass anything.

I just picked up my dress yesterday. I also have the mermaid style. I had the seamstress add cups (no bra to fight with) and take out only one layer of the crinolin. I was advised of the same thing. It looks wonderful and I really think taking out all of it wouldn't allow the dress the sit correctly. My wedding is end of August, so the less the better. I'd advise to take out one layer at a time, go slow with it, it's easier to have more taken out if needed than it is to try and put the dress back together! Good luck!

Thanks ladies for all the input. I had a feeling she was just trying to make a buck. I too had never heard of this... I'm pretty sure my dress only has 1 layer of tulle unerneath to give it some flare, which I love. It is JUST the right amount of puff. This is my dress:

I don't think I'll have a problem with my knees poking through.

omg no you wont at ALL. Dont listen to that, lol!
You do NOT need a slip for that style dress, that's similar to mine.
