Bloat Reducers without Salt Reduction?

I've been poking around reading lots of the posts and have found so many helpful ideas.

But I haven't seen anything quite like this:  how can you make sure bloat stays controlled while still having a high-ish sodium intake?

I have to consume a diet that's higher in sodium than is normally recommended... without it, I pass out from standing or turning too fast.  My cardiologist is the one that recommended this (more natural way to keep water in tissues than meds and so far it's working well).

Does anyone have some good ideas as to how to minimize bloat in this situation?

Thanks a bunch!

  • Really, you should ask your cardiologist this question.  My initial response is to say drink a ton of water but all that would do is flush out the salt which you need.

  • I have the same exact problem - I have orthostatic hypotension, and I will pass out from lack of salt (unless I want to go on steroids, which will bloat me even more). :(  I have gained 20 lbs of WATER WEIGHT in the last 2 years, due to needing to eat so much salt/drink so much water.

My cardiologist says to counter the salt bloat with muscle toning/fat loss - I don't have much fat to lose...it is basically all water. But I don't want to be faint or have to go to the hospital on my wedding day - and it isn't worth losing a little bloat for you to have your big day ruined with health problems, either. <3

  • It sounds like part of the point of your higher sodium diet is to force your body to retain water in your tissues.. so I don't think there's a way to avoid the bloat.. that's part of it!
  • Exactly.  The bloat is what keeps our blood pressure up.  If you lost your "bloat" (the water), your blood pressure will drop, and you will faint.  It is a crappy problem, but at least we get tastier food than those with the opposite problem. ;)

Just be healthy for your wedding day - it is all that matters!
