Fear of flying

Okay - so I leave tmrw at noon - flying out of Indy to Minneapolis, then to Seattle, then to Honolulu.  Not a fan of flying...anyone else out there that doesnt really like to fly - if so - how do you remain calm and settled?  Thanks ladies :)

    Pop a benadryl! lol.

The only time I get a little anxious is during take-off and landing. Just try to take some deep breathes in through your nose, out through your mouth. Close your eyes maybe during take-off and landing?

    Hope that helps!

I have flown multiple times a year for my whole life and it wasn't until I had kids that it started to freak me out, so pretty much the past 20 years.  FI and I just flew down to Phoenix/Vegas last month for his first flight in a commercial plane and he loved it.  Spent the take off and landing holding onto me and telling me that we are forever together and everything would be fine.  Try to relax.  I take my ipod full of movies, a book and a magazine.  When I get on I put all snacks, gum etc... where I can reach it.  I think its more a comfort thing that having it all right there.  Good luck.  I will be thinking of you.
@Diana, the Benadryl works but then leaves me more anxious as it wears off and that is almost worse that the flight.

I've found that I'm more at ease if I can engross myself in a really good book. They don't make you put it away during takeoff and landing as long as it's an actual book, so you can keep yourself distracted the entire time. And reading tends to put me to sleep after a while anyhow, which is nice. :)

And I just realized I never answered your question from another post - I live in the north suburbs of Indianapolis. :)

Have a fabulous trip and tell us all about it when you get back!!

A great book.  Or magazines.  Or focusing on your planning trip itinerary.  Something you can get engrossed in.

Bose noise cancelling headphones with movies or favorite songs (doesn't work during takeoff/landing but otherwise magical).

Loose, comfy clothes.  Seatbelt with just a wee bit of slack.  Nothing worse than a panic attack and then feeling constrained.

Printed photos.  I know it sounds silly, but photos of you & FI or something else that was a happy time.  It's a good way to keep yourself focused on the good times and look forward to landing and seeing your FI.

I hate flying, but love to travel so I just deal. :p  But I agree with the other girls, bring a book, magazine, or portable DVD player or anything to keep you distracted. I start reading before we even take off to relax.

Thank you everyone!  I know I will be fine - I just use to get panic attacks every day for 3 years - was on Paxil until I got pg with my son and then weaned myself off - and havent been on it since...and I get anxious still but havent had a full blown attack since I got off the meds...so I know I will be okay.  I already got a good book - "The Help" - or at least I heard it was good - great idea on the pics - I will plan on tucking a pic of my son and my Fiance in my purse...I am kind of glad I have 2 changeovers to help break up the trip....I also plan on sleeping some - I am going to be exhausted - haha!  But in the end I know I will have a very handsome Army man waiting for me in HI :)  and like you lorena - I want to travel so I will just have to deal - thanks sooo much ladies!!!  I appreciate all of your suggestions!!!  I have checked in and printed off my boarding passes - so I am ready to go - just finish up some last minute stuff tonight - tan, pedi, finish packing, laundry and I am good to go - yea!!!!! I am sure I will post on here during vaca :)

Tanq, I forgot about the Bose head phones. I thought head phones were no big deal until I got mine.  They cut most of the engine noise and you don't have to have your volume up too loud to hear.  I still keep them on during take off and landing because the noise is part of the scare for me.

You will be fine.  Just think you are going to be in Hawaii in a day!!!!

I'm totally the same way. And irrationally more scared of turbulence than take-off or landing.

Kaesha  - That is not irrational! I totally agree.

Spappano - I feel you. I use to have panic attacks and still deal with anxiety, and it starts to get pretty bad right before I fly. But soon you will be in a gorgeous setting ready to marry your love!

Have a safe trip and congrats!

Ohh, the Help was fantastic!!  I couldn't read it without hearing the Southern accent in my head when the maids were talking!!  It was great!!

Prescription drugs.  Really.  Just let your doctor know you're severely anxious when you fly and they can prescribe some anti-anxiety meds that will knock you out for most of the trip.

I'm with you--hate flying, but live to travel! I'm still waiting for the "travel-tubes" from "The Jetsons" (or as they're adapted in "Futurama").  No heights or long travel times, wouldn't that be nice!

Hope everything went smoothly for you!
