**J&K** Update on coconut oil

When I mentioned I was using coconut oil on my face you asked me to update in a couple weeks.  So here I am.

I actually have mixed feelings on it.  Here is what I noticed over the last couple weeks.  I have been putting it on every night after OCM and sometimes in the morning, depending on if I have enough time for it to fully soak in before I have to put my make-up on.

I think I mentioned before that I've been getting a bit of cystic acne on my chin.  Using the coconut oil I found that I still get them but they seem to heal significantly faster (about a week as opposed to multiple weeks or even months) and (sorry, I know it's gross) they come to a head so they can be drained.

The other thing I've noticed though is that it actually causes my face to dry out a bit.  Weird, huh?  That's the last thing I expected.

So my conclusion is that my results right now are inconclusive.  lol  I'm gonna give it another week before I decide for sure whether to keep using it or not.

Re: **J&K** Update on coconut oil

  • I'm butting in here.  I have coconut oil, and I don't like it on my face.  I just use the jojoba oil for actual moisturizing.  I DO love the coconut oil for my arms/legs/feet/hands though! And my hair. It has made such a difference with my hair. (I rub a glob of it through my hair as soon as I get out of the shower, before I towel-dry it at all.)  I've given up my expensive anti-frizz stuff when I use the coconut oil. (Especially impressive, because it's been drizzling here and super humid for the last two weeks.)

So, yeah. I agree. Skip it for your face, but use it everywhere else.

I'm butting in too. Steph- what do you put in your OCM? I started yesterday with castor, sunflower, and tea tree but I'm thinking I'll need jojoba because of my acne.

  • Hike, I went off of J's recommendation. I do about 50% castor and 25% each jojoba (I love it) and grapeseed.

I also have homemade makeup removing wipe things that I made with grapeseed and jojoba with tea tree oil. (That's how I know I love those two!)
  • Thanks! I'm going to order it online now!

That's interesting, Kimmie.  I want to call you J&K, hahaha.

Hmmm, I wonder if you just used it for a spot treatment on the cystic ones and used jojoba to moisturize if that would be better?  I might try that.  I get cystic acne when I eat gluten :(

Duds, I got mine from the grocery store (just Rainbow, not a natural/organic place or anything.)  It was like $8 for a big jar.  It's this stuff (link), I think.

The one 'weird' thing is that it's solid to gooey at room temp, but it liquifies quickly. I usually just swap a glob out with my finger and rub it between my hands for a few seconds, then run it through my hair or whatever.
  • Someone should school me on this OCM.  What benefits do the oils have for your skin/face?  I would think if you had acne, making your skin more oily wouldn't be the way to go?  Splain me this :)

  • CN on the idea is that your skin produces too much oil because it thinks it's dry.  So by using natural oils to moisturize, you can help balance out the level of 'oiliness' and your skin naturally readjusts.

Kind of like how washing your hair too often actually makes it more oily.

Sounds a little nuts, but it's totally true. I had to ditch my stronger face stuff since I've been KU, so I've been just cleaning/moisturizing with the natural oils and my face is WAY more evened out.
  • Oh well that makes perfect sense!

<div>Hmm... Spot treatment might work.  I should give that a try.  Although, I have to update again, I  ran out of my OCM mixture and upped the jojoba content for the new batch, then used coconut oil as usual all over after. I woke up this morning with the softest skin I've ever had.  So maybe it was the castor oil that was drying me out, not the coconut oil.</div><div>
</div><div>This is going to sound stupid, but what is gluten exactly?  I've heard lots of people talking about their allergy to gluten but don't really know what it is.  If cutting that out would get rid of cystic acne I'd be willing to give it a shot.  :)</div><div>
</div><div>AATB- Here's a link for OCM info if you want to read more.  She gets a little new-agey in places.  If you're into that sort of thing, great.  :)  Personally I just roll my eyes and shrug it off.</div><div><a href="http://www.theoilcleansingmethod.com/" rel="nofollow">http://www.theoilcleansingmethod.com/</a> </div>

  • Kimmi- basically, gluten is wheat.  There's way more to it than that, but that's the briefest explaination.  I realized I was allergic to gluten when I started really tracking food during WW.  For me, I get super bloated and 'icky' feeling... and I realized it was triggering my migraines.  It presents different in everyone (sinus issues, headahces, acne, etc etc.)

Gluten is also in a lot of processed foods (like gummy candy and dressings/sauces/etc.)  Very severe form of Gluten intolerance is Celiac's disease:
I going to be a butter inner and ask what kind of coconut oil you all use and where to buy it?
    Posted by ILoveMilkDuds
<div>Duds, the most important thing is to make sure it's UNrefined, NOT hydrogenized, virgin coconut oil.  If you get the other kind it will make you break out horribly according to everything I've read.  I just got mine at King Sooper's (grocery store chain) in their vitamin and supplement section. It was $6 (I think?) for a big huge tub.</div>

  • Thanks, Steph!  I may have spoken too soon, wheat products would be HARD for me to give up.  Oy.  I'll have to think that one over.  lol

  • It's not too bad, once you know what to avoid.

I mean, I totally caved during the really bad morning sickness, because all I could eat was crackers and toast.  But normally I have no issue with it, minus the occasional Twizzler.  Beer was the worst to give up :(
  • Do any of you OCM ladies have rosacea? That's been my biggest skin are issue, so I'd love to hear if using oils have helped with it. I've never tried it, and it kind of freaks me out!
  • Polichick- I don't have rosacea, but here's a link I found where she addresses OCM for rosacea.  Basically she says that OCM will be good for you, just don't use castor oil in your mixture.

  • Thanks for the info! :
  • I'm totally butting in.  =-D

I use that same CO that Steph posted.  Picked it up at Publix.  I use it in my hair (naturally curly) and for my crow's feet.  Jury's still out on that since it hasn't been long or consistent enough to see a difference.  I also use it on BB's fanny when she gets a rash since I cloth diaper and it's safe for the diapers.

  • Oh, and yes, castor oil can be drying.  You need SOME because that's what does the actual cleansing, but I was having some dryness too, and upping my jojoba oil and decreasing the castor a little helped a lot.

  • That is one of the things I like best about oil cleaning, it's so easy to tailor to your needs. Over the winter I used a minimal amount of castor oil. Now that it's getting warmer and more humid I just added a bunch of castor oil to my bottle and I'm set. Before I used to have a whole different routine for summer and winter.

This. And, I just rub in some jojoba oil on as moisturizer after too, which helps.
