Engagement Photos Hair and Makeup?

Hi ladies!
I hope everyone is having a good holiday season! I haven't been on here in a while because finals took over my life for a good month, but now I'm free and back to working on the wedding!
FI and I have engagement pictures on Wednesday and I can't decide what to do for hair and makeup. We are going ice skating in Rice Park, so we'll be outside for a good amount of time. I was planning to go and get my hair and makeup done, but I'm just not sure it's worth the cost. BUT, I always have a really hard time getting my hair to stay in any style and I don't wear much makeup at all (just mascara usually) so I don't really know what to do with my makeup. I'm worried about spending time doing my own hair and makeup only to have it fall flat or wear off, but I also don't want to spend a bunch of money and not look like myself.
Any advice? What did you do? TIA!

We actually did 2 e-pic sessions - one with my FI's brother, and one with a friend.  The first one I did my own hair and makeup, and the second one I had my hair done (just a blowout).  I completely regret having my hair done for me when we did our second set of pics!  I didn't look like myself, and ended up trying to tame my hair down in the car on the way to pics.  E-pics, in my opinion, should be true representations of who you and FI are, as far as wearing outfits that are your style, and doing your hair and makeup in such a way that you still look like your everyday self.

I totally hear you about your hair not staying where you put it, my hair does the same thing - I curl it all nice and about 20 minutes after I walk out the door, it looks like I never touched it!!  If you decide to have your hair done, maybe bring a picture of how you do it or at least a picture of exactly how you want it, so that it doesn't become too "larger than life."  As far as makeup, maybe a friend who is good with that could help out?  Or, if you are willing to make a small purchase from a makeup counter (The Bare Minerals store is my fave), they'll do most of the rest of your makeup for free.

P.s. I love the ice skating idea for your e-pics, can't wait to see how they turn out!!

I had my hair done at the Aveda Institute (make sure you give yourself plenty of time and come with a pic), I believe it was $10 or $15.  I had my makeup done at MAC (downtown) free with a $50 purchase of their cosmetics.  I was very happy with the way both turned out and would recommend it :) Good Luck!

I did my own hair and makeup for our 50s e-pics and it turned out fine. Instead of paying a lot of money for someone else to do it, I suggest buying your own quality makeup and practicing with tutorials online or having someone at a makeup counter give you a free little makeover. Lots of them will do it even if you don't purchase anything. With so many people opting for very natural looking e-pics, I don't think that it would be worth getting lots of special stuff done.

Unfortunately, the Aveda Institute is closed from Christmas to New Years as the students are on holiday break!  My sister discovered this when she tried to book for hair and nails for my fellow bridesmaids and I for her wedding this upcoming Thursday, 12/30.

The other above options sound good, though!  I agree that you don't need to worry too much about super fancy hair and makeup for engagement photos... I used my makeup trial for my engagement photos and it worked pretty well, but I probably just could have gone to get it done at a makeup counter, too.  The MAC store is pretty popular on the boards... I think the Uptown one comes highly recommended!

I wouldn't bother having your hair/makeup professionally done.  Like Jenn920 said, you should look like yourself, and especially if you're going to be out skating.  If you do any skating before, wouldn't you be worried about your hair going gnarly and the style falling out?

I did my own hair/makeup for our e-pics, and they turned out really nicely.  Of course anything I tried to do with my hair fell out, but I was still left with my own long straight hair that had been blow dried and smoothed, so I ended up looking like my normal self, but nicer.  I'm decent at doing my makeup, but I pretty much never wear any, so even just a little shadow/liner/mascara and some lip gloss showed very well.

I would have to agree with the NO to getting your hair/make up done. Be yourself you will ike it so much better. I wear a cute hat and scarf for the outdoor shots. Have fun!

Thanks for the advice ladies! I actually decided to go ahead and pamper myself and get it done professionally. I usually get my hair cut at Great Clips and I don't think I've ever had my makeup done professionally, so it will be nice. :) Not that I don't appreciate the advice though! I found a place that would do hair and makeup for $50 total, so I figured I'd go with that. I'll make sure I go armed with pictures so my hair doesn't get too "larger than life" and the makeup still looks natural.
I'll be sure to share the pics when we get them back too!
