Cord of Three Strands

I had posted on here awhile back asking about different ceremony options as far as the unity candles, sand ceremony, etc. Someone had suggested I check out the cord of three strands, and FI and I have fallen in love with the idea.

Any brides here done that? (Can't remember who suggested I look at it)
Anyone else planning on it?
Any advice?

Thanks!

I was supposed to do it but when it came to that point in the ceremony, I had no idea where it was.  My mom had placed it on the piano but never told me.  My sister was planning on reading the scripture from Ecclesiastes and talking about the significance of it so when it came to that point in the ceremony, I looked at her and told her that I wasn't sure what happened and to wing it.  She ended up reading the scripture and talking about the significance of Christ as Lord in our relationship and Head of our home.  She didn't reference the cord but it turned out beautifully none the less.

I made the cord myself.  DH and I braided it after the honeymoon.

So my advice is to make sure that you ask someone in your WP just to be aware of where it is so that when you get to it, you can find it.  I just had too many other things to worry about that I forgot!

  • hahaha, I could TOTALLY see myself doing that if you hadn't said something. I will make sure that my FSIL knows where it is lol she is BY FAR the most organized person in my WP!!!
  • We did it and love it.  As soon as we get a shadowbox, it's going on the wall.  We had my worship pastor sing "Love Never Fails" by Brandon Heath.  It was a little too long, but it still wasn't nearly as awkward as some Unity Candle songs.

We had my pastor read the description and symbolism of the cords before we braided.  I wouldn't change anything about it.

We didn't have the rubber band it comes with on the podium, so we'll have to rebraid it before it's displayed, but that's not a big deal.  We ordered ours from godsknot.com
  • I was looking at the ones on God's Knot, they look really nice, was going to ask if anyone did so I could get an idea of quality :)
  • I am currently looking at our cord :) we got ours from God's Knot as well, really good quality. Our pastor read a quick description while I braided and husband held it. We didn't have the rubber band/string to hold it together up there either, but I improvised and tucked the end of the strand through the bottom to hold it together. It actually worked out really well, and we didn't even have to rebraid it... just finished it off and tied it together. Also, we had the best man hold the cord so we did not lose it-- he had it in his jacket and then took care of it for us after. It worked out really well and I really appreciated the symbolism it added to the ceremony. It was lovely.

We did it and it was awesome! We got ours from godsknot.com too. I originally wanted to use our wedding colors but when I read about the symbolism of the purple, gold and white, I definitely wanted those colors. The godsknot one is great quality.

Our pastor read the Ecclesiastes passage and described the significance. We had my BM and my pastor's husband sing a duet (they sang When God Made You by Newsong and Natalie Grant) while we braided it. We had the rubber band to secure it up there (took a second to get it on haha but it worked well). I wouldn't recommend using the string while you are up there. You can always add the string later.

We have a shadowbox and also a frame for the description, but we haven't hung it yet haha.

    Anyway, I highly recommend it!
  • Thanks guys, I loved the symbolism of the colours for that one and was going to buy it the other day and then said to FI I'd check with you girls here before buying to make sure :) I think I'll order that after work tomorrow :)
  • I have never heard of this. It sounds really great and I'm considering doing the same with my husband. Thanks for mentioning it!
  • We are planning to do this at our wedding in June.  I was planning to buy from Godsknot and am glad to hear their quality is good.  This will definitely add a special element to our wedding day.
