Be your own DJ?

Hi knotties!

I was just curious if anyone has decided to be their own DJ?  IPODS make it so easy to have exactly what you want to listen to at your wedding...in addition to saving you the cost of a DJ.

Have you or are doing this?  Did you or your reception site already have the sound equipment?  Did you rent the sound equipment?  How did it go?

Thanks!

Re: Be your own DJ?

  • We didn't do this for our reception but we did do it for our ceremony. Our hall had sound systems to set up for it so it sounded fine. I think the two things in determining if this works for you at your own reception comes down to this a)What's the size/acoustics of the room? If you have a huge ballroom even with a decent sound system it may sound off or not carry through well. The other thing is you're most likely still going to need someone to "MC" the evening so to speak and man the iPod... basically to introduce the bridal party and you guys, introduce the people who are doing the speeches, announce dinner and switch playlists between the mother/son father/daughter, first dance, dinner music etc... I know I didn't have anyone I could have trusted enough to do all thoses but it's possible the hall has someone on their staff for the night of the wedding that could do it! Hope that helps.

we did our own and it totally rocked! super cheap and we felt like we had more control of the wedding. we did a lot of the mc-ing ourselves, which we thought added a more personal feeling. where we coulnd't, we had trusted friends help (ie best man introduced our first dance, close family friend introduced my dad and mine dance, etc.). we used a laptop and itunes -we made playlists for the cocktail hr, dinner, pre-cake dancing, cake cutting and post-cake dancing. it was a bit of work, but it was rellly important to my hubby that we have awesome music and he did not want the feel of a dj, so he did the bulk of the work for it! we rented a few speakers and speaker stands for under $100 - my dad had a microphone and mic stand we borrowed. it looked really professional and was perfect! and we have the playlists and like to play them around the house :)

  • Thanks so much ladies!  I just booked our venue...and they have their own sound system in the dining area, and outside on the patio where our ceremony will take place!  The music is probably the most important part for me b/c it means so much to my FI.  I think he will really enojy being his own DJ!
