Massive migraine, any home remedies?

I'm blaming it on this Chicago weather-going cold to warm and then warm to cold in the matter of hours.  Anybody have any suggestions?

It's time. Adoption saving and process started in November 2012.

  •  Cold washcloth on the back of your neck with lights shut off, head buried in pillow, and excedrin migraine
  • Excedrin, dark room, and try to sleep.

I hope you feel better soon!
  • Caffeine, one excedrine migraine and two naproxen sodium (Aleve), a dark room.

Everything the light touches is my kingdom.
  • Hot shower.
ice pack on forehead and back of neck.
Either peppermint or lavender oil on your pillow.
    Drink a lot of water.

All this besides meds of course.
    Do you have a prescription?
  • I take Excedrin migraine and lie down in a dark, quiet room.  Sometimes a hot towel works over my eyes (that's where mine are the worst) as well.  If you get them often, I agree with PP, you should talk to a neurologist about some kind of meds.  I take a really great abortive medication (i.e. take it as soon as you feel one coming on), plus acute meds for the really bad ones and preventives every day.  As my neuro puts it, 'No one should have to live with migraines'.  You may also consider keeping a headache diary so you can better track your triggers - when I realized there was a correlation between aspartame and my headaches, it helped a LOT.

  • Yah, I take Imitrex when they get really bad.  It helps, but I hate puting all these pain killers into my body all the time.  Can't be good for me!

Not all the medication options are painkillers.  It's true that loading up on painkillers (even OTC ones) isn't the greatest idea, and can even lead to some nasty rebound migraines. The preventive I take is not a painkiller but a tension reliever, and the preventives aren't painkillers either - most of them are better for you than taking Tylenol every day (which I was doing for a while).  And if you're taking Imitrex or other painkillers often, you really should talk to a doctor about other options; there are even plenty of non-medication options, like stress relief (massage, breathing exercises, yoga) and other alternatives like acupuncture, plus some people are able to control migraines strictly with diet.

Sorry, I'll get off my soapbox - it's just that I've been through a lot with migraines and I don't want other people to be miserable when sometimes it's a really easy fix :)

  • Dark rooms, continued attempts to sleep, oh and caffeine can also help if you can keep it down, but isn't a good idea for long-term approach). Either that, or a trip to the emergency room for medication... OR, what I usually do: wait until you throw up, do your best to nap (even for five minutes) and then hope that you feel better and don't repeat the process all over again.
