October 2012 Weddings

Changing your name

I have no idea where to even start with the name change process. It all seems so overwhelming, especially when I'm worrying about trying to finish everything else up for the big day. So, how many of you October brides are on top of it and already working on all the forms? And how many of you are taking it one thing at a time, and worrying about the name change process AFTER the honeymoon?

Also, if anyone has any fantastic resources for changing your name in Georgia, you would be my new best friend. haha.

  • I am waiting until after our honeymoon, because all of my travel documents need to match or we could have issues. If you are traveling out of the country I would wait until you get back.

  • I'm a Georgia bride as well and haven't really looked into it either for the same reason as you...I have no idea where to begin. All I know is I have to go to the social security office and I think I have to have a copy of my birth certificate and marriage certificate. I'm getting married Oct 20 and will be waiting until I get back to do anything about it because I won't have time since the social security office is over an hour away.

  • I'm also waiting until after our honeymoon to worry about this.  Too much going on right now.  My understanding is that you need your marriage certificate to get your license changed and then everything follows from that (at least in MA).

  • I am waiting, both for honeymoon reasons and because I'm in the process of applying for licensure as a clinical social worker, and it will be a lot easier to do that under my maiden name, then change it after my license goes through. I'll start using FI's name socially after the wedding, but it probably won't change legally for a couple months.

  • I am waiting until we get back. I know my first stop is SSA and then DMV. I have a list I found online of all the other places, for bills and dr., etc.
  • After the honeymoon.  Flights are in my maiden name so I won't have time in between.  I am going crazy with wedding planning, so no, I haven't even started looking into the forms.

  • The first place that you should change it is SS.  Here is a link to their name change page, (clicky).  Then go to DMV, banks, etc and get it changed there.  When you go, I would bring your original marriage certificate and a copy or two.  Some places want to see the original and some places want to keep a copy and some places don't wantto see any proof.  I know that when I changed my name twice on my Discover card, I just called them and told them to change my name and they did.

  • I'm not changing my name until next summer...I'm in the process of applying to grad school (would be starting in January) so I don't want to change it in the middle of the semester.  Although, I might just hold off and not change it until we're ready to start a family.  It's important that I have the same last name as my children, but until then, I'd like to keep my maiden name.

  • Thanks for the links everyone. I agree, it's just one more thing to worry about before the wedding. Plus I didn't even think about the fact that all of our honeymoon reservations and whatnot are all going to be in my maiden name. VERY good point.

  • I was having the same issues, but after reading the above posts, I think Ill be waiting until we get back as well. Everythings been a bit confusing for us because we're having my aunt do the ceremony (she got ordained online), and since we dont have someone whos done this before doing it, we're on our own as far as figuring it all out. So Im glad I read this! Def. not looking forward to all the hassel, thats for sure!
