Help! Long bridesmaids dresses in April?

My wedding is in April.  The ceremony is at 530 in a Catholic church.  The reception is at 7 in a country club.  I have a long detailed traditional looking ball gown.  I have been told by multiple people that it's too early to have long bridesmaids dresses.  My problem is I hate all the short bridesmaids dresses.  They all look like cocktail dresses to me (especially because i'm doing a shade of red).  Is is inappropriate to have long dresses for an April wedding?

    I dont think it is. Whatever you want them to wear, its an inside ceremony and reception that is sure to have AC, I think it will be fine

    It is completely appropriate to have long dresses in April.  This is your wedding and what you want your girls to wear, should be.  There is not a rule that says you're relegated to have your girls in shorter dresses b/c your wedding is in the Spring.  Go for it!

    I have never heard of such a thing. Generally I've only heard of long being inappropriate for a very informal wedding, which yours is not. Go with the long!

    I don't get it, what do these people think is an appropriate window for a long dress then? My BMs wore long dresses for my August wedding - is that too early? Too late?

    Anyway the length of the dress should be appropriate for the formality of the affair, regardless of season - which is the case for you. Go for it!

    long dresses in april or fine, they will just look more formal, maybe try a lightweight chiffony fabric to keep that spring feeling

    A long is dress is perfectly fine, now if it were made out of velvet or had fur trim then you would ahve a problem.

    Thanks so much everyone.  You guys have eased my mind more than you know.  I'm going to make an appointment to go look at dresess with my bridesmaids again and this time look at long ones!  Thanks again!
