HELP! Should we pick a location sight unseen?

Here is the deal-io...we've pretty much decided on the Cancun area for the wedding (well, the first, second in Germany) hopefully on 12.11.10.

I really have no idea if we should choose a site now not having been down to look at places OR if we should wait until we go down there (business trip) the first week of June.

Will that be too late?

Thoughts? Did you choose your hotel/site without actually seeing it?

I'm thinking we need a travel agent to help narrow things down as well...

HELP!

I would definitely talk to a travel agent that is knowledgeable about destination weddings!  A lot of girls on the board use destinationweddings.com and beach bum vacations, I believe.
  • I personally wouldn't and didn't...if you do definitely contact a travel agent like the pp mentioned.  For me I have too much anxiety to just trust something will be nice from pictures...pictures can be deceiving and they may not be up to date.   We narrowed down our search to 3 places in Key West after we received quite a few information packets...went onto orbitz, found a good deal for a weekend  3 weeks away and then contacted the 3 venues and said we would be down for this weekend and when could we make an appointment.  I had to physically SEE the venue myself before I would book it....but thats just me and i'm a little paranoid.. :o)
  • O and I don't necessarily think June is too late....but I know if it were me I could not wait that long!
  • I've never been to Key West and I booked without seeing the venue. To me that was part of the destination wedding experience...it's an adventure, you know? And if it's not *exactly* what I was expecting, then oh well...it's not the end of the world. I think if you do your research you can get a good idea of what to expect.

  • I also booked my wedding in Key West without doing a site visit, and it turned out to be just what I expected, and probably a little bit better.  I agree with Alison - it is an adventure.  And if you think about it, the majority of DW brides aren't lucky enough to do a site visit.

Plus, I'd think that if you are using an AI in Cancun, you can find many reviews from girls who have already been married there before.

Don't stress and good luck!  Smile

  • I couldn't do it, so we made the trip down.  I'm glad I did, because the ones I LOVED on paper/online were the worst and the ones I wasn't too sure about ended up being my favorites.  Had I booked just based on what I found online, I would have ended up with a whole lot of headaches and a major drinking problem!
  • I just posted on the Cancun post but I haven't been there but my TA has. She helped us narrow the places based on our wants and needs. Not only that, she's personally been to all of the resorts and wed down in Mexico last year herself! So I feel completely at ease with her knowledge.

And I agree with Alison... Adventure, here we come! :)

  • I did (although we weren't picking a resort) and it turned out just fine! If you absolutely can't pick w/o seeing it then just be prepared to be flexible w/ your date. Also check out trip advisor for reviews!

  • We are going site unseen also and I agree with pp, I like the "adventure" of it. The only thing I would worry about booking in June is that the wedding slots do fill up at the resorts so you might not get the exact day or time you originally wanted.

  • I also booked my location sight unseen. Fortunately, a bunch of knotties had chosen the same location for their wedding, and I had seen pictures of their gorgeous weddings. That was a big help. When I finally went to see it in person, I was not disappointed.
  • We are going to Florida this weekend for site visits, but I have family there so the trip was already planned before the idea of having the wedding there came about. I feel like it is a major added bonus, but it is not something I would do if my wedding were a lot further away and I'd have to pay for lodging etc. I'd rather spend the extra funds I'd use for a trip towards the wedding budget and be able to afford higher quality vendors that I'd feel more confident about.

I feel like June might be a little late if you want that exact date, since it will probably be a popular one, plus December is peak season for Mexico travel. If you can be a little flexible or would consider a weekday, waiting until June might be OK.

  • The only reason I think june will be to late is for your guest. You want to give them
time to save money for your wedding!
Besides that just get on the tripadvisor and other travel and wedding websites. There are alot of people out there that have seen the places! The tripadvisor will never steer you wrong!!!! And can say that cause I use them for every trip and I travel alot!   So I think you are completely fine with booking cancun for your wedding without seeing it first! Good Luck!
  • We had been to Mexico a couple of times before we got engaged.  The resort we usually stay at is a little more expensive than we wanted for our guests so I went to tripadvisor and found our resort there.  I went by the reviews and checked out different resorts' websites and narrowed it down to one (The Royal PDC).  We booked our wedding without viewing it first but we did take a long weekend to check it out afterwards so that we could be 100% sure that we (and our guests) would like it before too much planning happened.  Worst case scenario is I would have been out the $200 deposit if we decided against it, but we ended up having a great time.
