Did all your bridesmaids try on the dress before ordering?

I am having a hard time finding anywhere besides David's Bridal that has dresses over size 12 to try on in store. I am letting them pick their own dresses (we are looking at the Alfred Sung line but I would be open to something else if it came in the right color). I have called 6 stores today and all say that they have one or two dresses in size 14 but the rest of their samples are smaller (mostly size 8). We probably need size 16. They said that is pretty much the case for all of their designers.

So now I am stuck. David's Bridal is not ideal because the color was not right and even in the closest wrong color my fiance's sisters (standing on his side) only had 3 dresses to choose from. So is it okay to just have them pick from a picture? I feel awful but I don't know what else to do to be fair to everyone.

  • The Davids Bridal I was at had a lot of different styles in larger sizes.  You may want to call the next nearest David's Bridal to see if they have a bit larger of a selection.  My MOH was able to try a size 20 on in the dress I was leaning towards but ended up needing a 22 so she is going to try it on at the DB closest to her before ordering.
  • TXKristan: We would have two in Ebony and five in one of the purple colors. The ebony is the hard one to find. The guys are in grey tuxes so we want a dark gray that matches as close as possible. David's Bridal's pewter was too light and so are most other brands we have found that have a lot of dresses to choose from.

mlg78: I think you misunderstood or I didn't explain myself well. David's Bridal was fine for sizes, the dresses there just aren't really what we were looking for. I can't find anywhere else that carries lots of sizes. So either the girls that need over size 12 order from a picture without trying them on, or the girls in gray (my fiance's sisters on his side) only have three options to choose from (and I don't really like the color they are in anyway).

  • I have 7 BM, and 4 came shopping. The others just called their measurements into the store. Everyone but one has picked up their dress now and they all fit just fine.

  • I only had two BMs so yes both tried them on before purchasing. However I was in a wedding where the bride picked the dress with her MOH and then the rest of us just called in our size/measurement.

  • I would talk to the girls that aren't able to try on the samples to get their take.  Personally, if I can see and touch a dress in a small sample size, I have a pretty good idea of whether it will work on my body.  I can't tell much from photos on a model, though.

<div>I guess I will have to do that. I just wanted some feedback before I brought it up because I feel so bad. Bridal shop sizing sucks and I know it made them feel badly the first time we went (the store only had up to a size 10, I hadn't even thought to ask before we went). Thanks everyone!</div>

  • 3 out of 7 girls went with me to try on bridesmaid dresses. I emailed the pics to the rest of the girls and all but 1 liked it and had no problem ordering. The 1 girl that didn't like the dress got a different one (she wore the same dress as the MOH).

  • All 4 went with me. 3 fit into sample size (8-12). The shop had a range of sizes . They couldn't try on the exact dress in their exact size. However, every shop we went to (3 in all) had at least some up to size 16. They also do all kinds of things to get an idea how the dress will fit. So my smaller bridesmaid had clips everywhere holding the dress on her and one couldn;t zip most dresses past her bustline and just clipped the back to her bra. Overall, we had fun, laughed at how ridiculous some of the dresses looked on and everybody ordered a dress without having the perfect size to try on. The shop takes measurements. It works out. (I didn't like the current styles at Davids either, so I was glad to find a dress elsewhere)
  • Hi, I suggsest you the JenJenHouse.com.
I have bought several dresses from them and the color and quality are gorgeous.

Recently, they are holding an activity on FB, you could go and have a look.
