Household Items to buy?

I am a currently a college student. I get a check each semester that is scholorship money that I had left over after paying for tuition, books, ect. FI and I thought it would be a good idea to go ahead and buy things that we could use in our home once we get married. Things like towels, decorating things, shower curtains, comforter sets, ect. I know that my Mother and my FMIL are going to host me two seperate bridal showers already. I was wondering if any of you ladies could tell me of any other household items that you did not recieve at your bridal showers or things that are extremely useful in life lol. Sorry if this sounds completely crazy.

  • I love Clorox wipes. It isn't an item I would register for but they are great to clean/disinfect stuff without getting out your cleaning supplies.

Why not put the money aside and save it that way you can buy whatever isn't bought off your registry? That way you can give your guests the option of gifts to give you

  • Due to the amount of the scholarship, we aren't using all of it. Just a portion. The rest will be the first to go in our joint savings account :)

  • Do you have furniture? Saving that money for furniture could be really helpful.

  • The portion that is going in savings will most likely go towards furniture. We already have a kitchen table and chairs/bench that belonged to FI's late grandfather, so we won't need one of those. I just wanted to know about little things.

  • I stock up on household supplies when they are on sale and I have a huge rubbermaid container for it .. Its not like I am a coupon freak but if I see a buy one get one free on household stuff I usually buy it.... I also bought spices and and nonpershable food type stuff like that... I spend about 10 - 15 dollars every few weeks. That way it's not having to buy it all at once later.

  • The best thing my mom ever advised me to do was to register for extra of certain things and then store it until it was needed.  For instance, extra kitchen towels, glasses, place settings, etc.  Inevitably you will need them (dishes break, towels get holes) and it was nice to have that box in the garage.

Things we didn't get....hmmm.  If I had known then what I know now I would have registered for a second set of silverware, more sheets, extra pillows, extra measuring cups and spoons, things like that.  Oh, and invest in the glass lock storage containers for leftovers.  Those are the best.

You can also never have enough spatulas/mixing spoons or mixing bowls, serving dishes, or cleaning supplies.  Don't forget about little things like the toilet brush or a scrubber for the shower.  A microplane is a must, and a cheese grater.  Oh, and I forgot to get a turkey baster.

We also started married life without a microwave, toaster, or blender.  I ended up buying H a blender for Christmas that year because he wanted one so badly, we got a toaster oven and I eventually convinced H we didn't need a toaster in addition, and I finally broke down and bought the microwave with wedding money because it was clear we weren't going to get one as a gift.

Oh, and what's your washer/dryer situation?  That'd be something good to invest in too.

  • I didn't even think of spices! Do you know what the shelf life is for those? We thought about going ahead and buying a comforter set and bathroom decor (shower curtain, trash can, tooth brush holder, etc.).

  • We are holding off on buying major appliances like a washer/dryer or stove or fridge. I don't know about the housing market in your area, but around here is it very common to buy a house with those items included and often they are in new/great condition.

  • I would also recommend holding off and saving that extra money until after the showers and all.  That way you can get what you need and can genuinely tell everyone "Thank you so much, we still needed this!!"  :P

<div>If you're buying a house, sock it all away for a down payment. You really will get a lot of your household items from the registry and many places offer completion discounts where you can get them cheaper than you could buying them now. </div><div>
</div><div>I'm in the save it camp too. I wish when I was in college I had been wise enough to save my $$ instead of finding things to buy. </div>

    Agreed!!

FI is employed full time but I'm in college. We have been really good about saving our money and it has really paid off. I recommend you hold off on buying this stuff until after the showers/wedding.

  • I'd wait until after your showers.  I'd also wait until one of you is living where you'll live together.  Moving stuff stinks!

  • oh yeah, definitely wait until after the showers, and do it as a completion.  most places give you 10-20% off of your completion purchases but you don't usually get that until after your wedding date.

And ditto lots of savings, especially if you're buying a house.  Everytime you think you've got things under control, something else goes wrong - the furnace needs fixing, the plumbing starts leaking, the garage door opener breaks.  It's never ending.

I agree with those who say save it! I know after my wedding date anything that wasnt purchased off our registry we get 30% off...so we'll probably use extra mony for that...also we just bought a house and seriously...houses are expensive. If you are looking for a house, wait and then use the money for things you cant ask for (we had to buy air filter things that keep the air flowing around the insulation in the attic, we are finishing the basement, upgrading appliences, etc....extra money would be sooo helpful right now!)
