Makeup artist or D.I.Y?

I know there are a lot of posts on here about hiring a professional to do your makeup for your big day, but what if you are a makeup artist?

I have been a freelance makeup artist for quite some time now and am confident in my skills. I love doing my own makeup and know what works and looks good on my own face.

That said, I am terrified that I will be too stressed out and rushed on my big day to sit down and do a great job with my own makeup. On the flip side, I am also worried that another makeup artist won't "get it right". I'm used to wearing a decent amount of makeup and want to look totally glam.

Has anyone else had their makeup done by a professional even though they knew they could do it themselves? Is it worth the stress relief to have someone else take care of it for you on your big day? I hope I don't sound totally ridiculous, I'm just curious what other peoples thoughts are :)

I did my own makeup for my wedding, even though I'm most definately not a makeup artist. Several weeks prior to my wedding, I had a trial done and wasn't wowed by the results. My mom even told me she thought it didn't look as good as my everyday makeup I do myself. I think if you are capable of doing your makeup yourself and are afraid someone else might not get it right, go ahead and do it. Hiring someone to do it and then not liking how it turns out might end up being more stressful than if you just did it yourself.

  • I've been going back and forth with the same question. I had a trial and hated it. Many people told me that I did my own makeup better. With that being said, I'm getting my makeup done at the salon that's doing my hair (not where my trial was) and bringing pictures of what I want. The only reason I'm not doing it myself is because I don't have the time. My wedding is at 10 am and my salon doesn't open until 8 so there is no way after getting my hair done I will have time to do my makeup myself. I also don't want to do it before my hair appointment cause by the time of my ceremony it's already 3-4 hours old. I'd say if your comfortable with how you do your own makeup, and you have time to do it without rushing, your better off than having someone do a terrible job.

  • I'm going to school after the wedding to get my license to be an esthetician/makeup artist and I don't doubt my skills, but I'm definitely getting someone to do my makeup.  I did a trial run, knowing that when I get nervous or anxious I get the shakes (kinda like a chiuaua) so I drank about 3 cups of coffee in a row and tried to do my makeup.  It did NOT work out and that solidified the fact that I'm bringing someone in.

It also boils down to things might come up and you might keep putting it off to the last minute thinking "oh, I know what I want, I can do it fast/I don't really need that much time" I want to make sure I have someone there to pretty much sit me down, tell me to hush, relax, and let them take the reins for a bit.

I'm not a professional at all.  I thought I would be nervous doing my makeup the day of the wedding. I gave myself a lot of time in case I messed up and had to start all over.  I didn't mess up.  It went very smoothly and the act of doing my makeup was very relaxing and comforting.  I think it depends on how you feel about doing makeup.  I really enjoy the act of doing my makeup, especially when I don't have to rush.  If you normally like to do your makeup, you should be fine.

If you make a realistic time schedule, you shouldn't be rushed at all.  If you feel anxious and have the money, why not try at least one trial?

I'm doing my own makeup.  I'm not a MUA, but I am a professional actor and I do childrens Princess birthday parties every week so I am used to doing my own makeup to be photographed in.  I know what I want and I'm confident that I can do it even when nervous.  I don't think I'd be as happy with someone else's work in the end.
  • I'm doing my own makeup...I had a bad experience having someone else do my makeup before when I stood in a wedding that I didn't think I looked like myself in pictures!  And the wedding is at 10 am so I really don't have time to go anywhere beforehand to get it done, and since I'm content doing everything myself I'd rather forego professional hair and makeup and spend that money on something else.
Whoever said it was supposed to be happily ever after is a big fat liar.
  • I did my own and thought that it looked really nice, and I'm no professional. I was even running late and had a headache of a time with my hair salon that morning, and I still had the peace of mind to do my own makeup and put on falsies that looked good. I think that if you are confident in knowing what you want, you will be just fine!

My mom is a professional makeup artist and when she got married the second time around she said that when she was doing her own makeup that was the one moment of peace and clarity that she had. Because it was so routine for her, as it likely is for you, you may find that it is relaxing to do your own wedding day makeup. Best wishes!
