Band or DJ?

I'm very conflicted as to whether to get a band or DJ for my wedding. my fiance and I are very into music and love to dance. My # 1 wish for my wedding is to have all of our guests on the dance floor the entire night. At the same time, I don't want my wedding to turn into a club and I want to be able to engage the wide range of guests that we have. I already know that if we go the band route, they need to be able to sing today's hits which likely means that the band is going to get costly.

What do you think? Has anyone had a similar dilemma?

Haven't been to a wedding that had a band yet. As for DJs, just make sure you have someone who is an actually DJ, not someone who just plays songs one after the other without properly mixing. A seamless play of tracks with smooth transitions is more important than most think! It disrupts the flow if the music becomes all bungled and messy.

Um, what? Why would that make it more expensive?

I think you should try to go some band and DJ showcases in your area. Whichever route you go, you need to find the right personality who will engage your guests, whether it's a band leader or a DJ/MC.

Personally, we would have loved to have had a band, but it wasn't in the budget. If you can afford it, I say go for it.

We had a DJ and he was awesome! I think if you get a DJ, meeting him and making sure his personality and "vibe" matches with what you want is key. Having said that, there are lots of bands that can cover popular songs. I don't know about price; that would vary depending on location as well as the band, but it won't hurt anything to contact some and get some quotes!

In response to the question "Why does that cost more?" In order to mix properly the DJ would not only have to have natural musical intuition but also years woth of rehersing and experience. Quite simply a DJ that mixes is a professional and they cost more than a guy trying to make a few bucks as a weekend warrior. Like anything in life you get what you pay for.

DJ

A band's music always sounds the same to me and just gets monotonous.

At least with a DJ you can have some control as to what they play or don't play. If you don't want it to be a club, make that clear. Say "every several songs play a club song", but then they can mix it up with a slow song, a country song, a waltz, then a club song, etc and repeat. Leaves room for more of those classic wedding songs too that are always eyerollers but sometimes you just have to play one. If there is a song you really hate, they can put it on a no play list. And a DJ should be cheaper as well.
