Wedding Vows & Ceremony Discussions

Destination wedding & a Catholic church ceremony.

Hello,

Recently got engaged.  We would like to go away & get married, just ourselves.  When we get back, we will have a party to celebrate.  We would like to married in the catholic church.  Any suggestions?  Fiance would like Rome.  Has anyone done this?  THANKS

  • I would recommend the Catholic board under "Cultural Wedding Boards."

I would think it would pretty hard to find a Catholic priest who will marry you in a destination, as they will not be your home church, and may not feel comfortable performing a ceremony if they don't know who you are or anything about your standing in the church.  Though it's possible that you can find someone like Kristan's friend in Rome who will agree to do it.

Otherwise, you'll probably need to do a civil wedding at your destination, then a Catholic ceremony back home, which is called a "convalidation" and is a blessing of your marriage.   I would recommend you talk to your priest about what your options are for blessing a marriage that has already taken place elsewhere.  Also you will want to check to see if a marriage abroad will even be legally reconized in the US.  If not, then you might rethink the destination elopement.
