Cake Recs in N.O & Metairie Area

My bridesmaids are planning a B-shower for me next month. My MOH wants to order the cake from "Creative Cake", however I think their cakes are horrible. MOH just had a birthday party for her daughter and ordered her cake from them and the cake was so dry it crumbled as soon as you put a fork in it. I mentioned it to her, but she kind of blew me off. My mom is purchasing the cake out of her own money, and asked me which one I would prefer considering MOH is pushing more towards "Creative Cake". I told my mom to not let MOH bully her into purchasing a cake from them, but suggested other places such as "Royal, Adrian's, or Swiss".

Do you guys have any recs for good cake bakers in the N.O. or Metairie area, or have had any experience with dealing with the bakeries listed above?

I personally like the Maple Street Patisserie or Haydel's.  I've only heard good things about Swiss.  I had some sort of small sweets from Swiss once, and they were delicious.

Awesome thanks! MOH told my mom that she'd heard bad things about Swiss, but I told her that I couldn't believe that because they generate so much business.
You didn't find that Haydel's cake was dry?

  • We reserved from Royal Cakery and it was the best cake I have ever had. Very moist and delicious.
  • Queen Jane, I agree.

  • My wedding cake was from Flour Power and it was amazing, but I also really like the Berry Chantilly cake from Whole Foods.  I don't know why, but it always reminds me of something you would serve at a shower.

You have been reading my mind. I was just thinking gosh, I wish Whole Foods could bake a Chantilly cake for 50-75 ppl.

  • Haydel's and Gambinos are very good. We had Gambinos for the Engagement party and everyone loved it!

We've been getting birthday cakes from Haydel's for years and have never had problems with the cake being dry.  My all time favorite is actually Zoe's in Covington, but we save that for special occaisions since it requires a drive across the lake.
  • Swiss, Gambinos and Maurices are delicious choices and are reasonably priced.

  • I was just about to suggest Whole Foods.  Dorignacs and Rouses both have great cakes.  As a matter of fact, there is a Rouses near my work and I've been known to buy "by the slice" cake on a bad day.  HA!

egammo3-My mom looked into getting one from Whole Foods.  They can definitely make them, but I don't know what the pricing is like.

FWIW-My sheet cake from Flour Power cost $144 to feed 100 people.  Their white chocolate strawberry shortcake is just the best cake I have ever had.
  • Check out Croissant d'or Patisserie in the French Quarter - fantastic cakes. Haydel's is also very good!
  • Thanks everyone!

  • I recommend a girl named Megan Foucheaux. Her website is cakedesignsbymeg.com. I am getting my wedding cake done by her and my mother raves about her cake, cake pops, and other desserts.
