Advice/encouragement please!

I've mentioned here before that I've had two TIAs (ministrokes) in the past few years.  Both occurred when I was on ABC (treating medical issues).  Well, I went off BC when I got engaged in June, and didn't start getting my period until mid-November.  It still hasn't stopped, so I'm finally going to the dr.  I've avoided it because I know what she's going to say: that I have to go back on BC .  Even with my risk for stroke, my neurologist and hematologist agreed that I could be on BC, and so does my Gyn.  I've gone against medical advice going off BC, but I'm terrified of having a full-blown stroke.

So basically, I need advice and encouragement.  My appointment is Fri morning, and I am 95% positive all I will hear is "you have to be on birth control."  I know you ladies are very knowledgeable about BC alternatives, so is there something else I should ask to try?  I'm just so stressed/nervous, and let me tell you, 9-week periods really make you emotional!

Re: Advice/encouragement please!

  • If you are at risk for stroke, BC could be deadly for you.

Go to www.omsoul.com and find a napro doc. If you can't find someone there, go to http://www.popepaulvi.com/   and talk to them and see if they can help.

  • wow, that is really hard! I am so sorry you are going through this... sending prayers your way!
I'm sure others on this board are much more knowledgable about this than I am, and maybe you've said why this isn't an option before, but is it possible for you to go see an NFP/Creighton doctor or gyn?
They certainly wouldn't recommend ABC, and would definitely do everything they could to get to the root of the problem.
Even if it's expensive or far away to make an appointment with such a specialist, that's crazy to have bleeding for so long! (I would hardlly call it a "period" at that point...) If I were you, I would certainly do everything I could to seek out medical advice from someone who will treat the problem, not just with ABC.

  • were you getting your period while on the pill?

i do think that stroke is one of the rare potential side effects of the pill.  so if you are someone who suffers from strokes, that does seem illogical to put you on a drug that may increase your chances of stroke.
  • Wow, that is so much to be going through!  Praying it all goes well!

  • I'm so sorry you're going through this!  Sending prayers your way.

My sister worked with someone who had a full blown stroke from ABC that left permanant brain damage, so I understand your nervousness.  I would suggest reading Fertility, Cycles and Nutrition and talking about other options with a doctor who respects your concern.  I know there was a whole section on natural alternatives for dealing with prolonged bleeding (I skipped that section so I can't tell you what it said).  Good luck at your appointment.

  • I'm so sorry you're having to endure this!!  I had a 3 week period once (post BC for crazy cycles)... but 9 weeks sounds incredibly awful and very abnormal!  You'll be in my prayers and I hope your doctor and NFP instructor can be supportive and help remediate the issues.

  • Hey Ladies!

Just wanted to update you since I had my appt today.  They are checking my thyroid levels, and then if that is normal they will send me for a pelvic ultrasound (internal....not looking forward...),  She didn't suggest BC -- she even said "I don't think we want to try BC because of your medical history."  So that's good.  Of course, the bleeding stopped today, but who knows if it'll stay stopped for more than a few hours?

The dr office will call Monday and let me know whether to schedule the ultrasound.  Hopefully they'll figure out what is wrong with me sooner rather than later!

  • Sounds like it was a positive appointment with good steps in the right direction. I will certainly keep you in my prayers.
