Not Oface, but at least in my neighborhood, the street is a hell of a lot more even than the side walk. I'd trip and fall smack on my face if I ran on my neighborhood's sidewalks.
YES, mrsconn. Plus, when it is nasty conditions-ie snow or ice, people don't shovel or salt their walks so I avoid and would rather run in the street and hop on the curb than fall and break my leg.
And as Mrsconn said, a lot of sidewalks are uneven, not well maintained and honestly...I take up less than 2' on the road, you have another 24'...move over. Sorry, that's the breaks. I also wear BRIGHT BRIGHT clothing so people can see me and run against traffic where I can.
Anytime I may be running in the street I leave my headphones at home. It annoys me so much when people run in random dangerous places listening to music.
I don't care what the reason is, but it &*#^$* pisses me off. Every morning I drive through the twisty turny streets of my mom's neighborhood and every morning I have to manuever my way through the runners, parked cars, dogs and their walkers, and people backing out of their driveways without paying attention. It's a miracle that no one in that neighborhood has been killed by less conscientious drivers. The sidewalks are there for a reason, people.

LOL.
The worst was about 2 years ago when a lady was running in the street through my mom's neighborhood with her jogging stroller with an INFANT in it. My mom had a large landscaping truck with a trailer turn right in front of her, and caused my mom to make a decision on letting the trailer hit her, hitting a parked car, or hitting the lady with the stroller. My mom had to let the trailer hit her. My mom got out and started screaming at the woman for endangering her child and others, and the woman told my mom to mind her "own f-ing business" and ran off. A few days later, I saw the same woman, running with her baby in the stroller, in the street. I pulled over and yelled at her. She ignored me, but we haven't seen her running in the street with a stroller since. People are dumb.
And all of this reminds me of stupid Kelly Bensimon from RHONY, running through the streets of Manhattan with a line of cars behind her.
Sorry, this is a hot button for me. Can you tell. :)

Oh, I think there's plenty of blame to go around. There are people out there that just think the road is there, no matter what. If I'm running on the road, it's where there's a large shoulder and not a lot of traffic.
DH has been hit by a car, twice, on his bike (one was someone who literally ran into him at a red light!). People just don't pay enough attention in their cars all around. I try to be hyper vigilant and I almost hit a cyclist the other day. I felt horrible.

Good thing I don't run.

THIS is what bothers me:
I just a friendly gal looking for options.

I was hoping she would get hit by a cab.
