I laughed out loud when I saw this:

My fiancee really wants to add a small breathalyzer to our registry, because we often have friends over and we want to make sure they're OK to drive home, or to take with us when we go out to make sure we're OK to drive home.  My mom thinks this is totally inappropriate for a wedding registry and thinks it will "offend a lot of people and damage my reputation."  I think that view might be a bit extreme, but I don't want to put something inappropriate on our registry if it is inappropriate.

    I don't see why that would be offensive.  If anything, it demonstrates how much you care about others. :)

    It's one thing to collect keys at the door, or say, "Hey Bob, let me call you a cab." A breathalyzer is taking that care and concern to the extreme.

    I can't imagine buying someone a breathalyzer let alone making my friends use one.

    PMB- The only people that should collect keys at the door are swingers.

    I raise an eyebrow at home-breathy-tests.  Mostly because they may measure the legal limit (which, of course, changes momentarily...as the person sobers up or finishes absorbing the alcohol sitting in his/her stomach--so both directions) but they don't really measure impairment.

    No. It encourages people to drink more to see how high they can make the reading go. And I give a hard side-eye to any adult who thinks they need this to know whether they or their friends are in any shape to drive.

    I get the feeling the OP is in the 19-22 range.

    I would judge anyone with this on their registry.

    If they really want one, are they incapable of buying it on their own?  Why does it have to go on the registry.

    I'd really like a box of tampons.  Put it on my registry!  How else am I supposed to get it?
