Which do you prefer- a corset back or button down?

I know that I'm in the minority on this one- but I really prefer a button down back over a corset.  However, I've heard that one reason to love the corset back is b/c you can pull it to hug your curves better then a button down.
Is this true???

What do you ladies prefer?  (I'm betting already I'm in the minority=) )
* Lets say that "button down" and zipper are in the same category.  I believe that the button downs are typically hidden zippers anyway.

judge the non-traditional, pop their happy little wedding balloons... and sleep better tonight for you have made the world a better place.

Re: Which do you prefer- a corset back or button down?

  • I voted for button down back because personally I don't like the look of the bow that you have when you use a corset back.  IMHO it looks a little like a tail.  Plus I was lacing up a girl's BM dress last summer and it was a pain to get the corset back to look right.

However, I am not looking forward to my FI having to undo all of those buttons on our wedding night.  It will be a big pain.
  • I didn't used to love the corset look, but I do now.  Plus it is MUCH more forgiving if you gain or lose a lot of weight.  You can save money on the alterations.

  • Corset all the way!

I like the lace up look at the back (though if you wear a long veil it's generally hidden) but oh my GOD a corset gives you SUCH a great shape!

It IS true, those babies really pull you in.

I tried on a dress on Saturday with a corset back and there was my waist! I couldn't believe it, I haven't seen my waist since, oh, about 1986!

I guess it would all depend on the dress though - some lend themselves more to button down backs while others are better with a corset.

I LOVE how the buttons look.  I am not a fan of the corset at all.  that was one thing I did not want on my wedding dress.  and corset back is on almost every dress it seems these days.
    personal preference though.

  • I'm corset back all the way! If the dress I chose didn't have it I was going to have it altered to add it. Yes it does pull and suck you in like nothing you've ever seen LOL and its great. The button up is still very pretty but I LOVE the look of the corset back. As far as the bow being in the back, you can tuck it inside at the end of the corset lining so that its not hanging out and looking like a "tail" as someone else mentioned, however mine isn't super long its the perfect length and I think it looks great bowed and hanging at the bottom.
  • I love button back dresses. I have to agree w/ previous posters, the corset back was one of the things I wanted to avoid when I was buying my dress. I don't hate it or anything it's just not my personal style.

  • I LOVE the way buttons look on a gown.  Unfortunately, mine is just a zipper but I will be adding buttons.  IMO I think that the corset back reminds me too much of a prom dress.  I think that corset dresses can be very pretty and they are much more forgiving but my personal preference is buttons.
  • For fit I like the corset, but hate the tail too. So, I found a designer that has a mini inner coset so that your dress is held up really well, but then also has covered buttons. I love it :)
  • I agree with the poster that said it looks like a prom dress. I am planning on wearing an actual corset under my dress and having the button down look, but this is because I am having an 1880s gown custom made. If people are wanting to get the right shape, though, why not do both?

  • Personally, I think a button down has a much more elegant and sophisticated look.  A corset is convenient and flattering, but if its the look you are going for, I think button down is the way to go.
  • Corsets make you look amazing! I'm going to tuck in the bow as I don't like it hanging out eiter!
  • I like both but the corset on my type of body was WAY more flattering.

  • I love the corest back! It flatters your shape and you don't have to worry about gaining  or losing a little weight. And I'm going to tucking my tails into my dress so their not in the way and give a beautiful dress a semitacky look.

  • I personally do not like they way corset backs look, but I do agree that they give you an amazing figure.

I got the best of both worlds and went with a dress that has a built in corset thing and zips up in the back, with buttons to cover.
  • Buttons all the way!  I loved having buttons all the way down the back of my dress.  I agree that the corset backs will give you a good shape, but they aren't my style.  I like the classic elegance of the buttons.

  • I like corset back, It actually feels more comfortable to me.
  • Buttons. I think that row of buttons down the back is timeless.
  • I knew going into it that I was getting a corset back, for several reasons.  My weight tends to fluctuate, and I love the look.  I already have curves, but I know FI will love how I look in the corset, too!  Buttons are beautiful, but a little too traditional for me.
  • My dress is a corset back, and I knew I always wanted a lace up back on my dress, I just think it's classy-sexy if that makes any sense. I shouldn't even need alterations if I lose weight before the wedding because they can just pull the laces tighter. I also don't like the bow that hangs out, so we're tucking mine in and were shown how at the dress shop.
