The church didn't allow aisle runners, so we didn't have one.  Which worked out great because the church already has a decor and I didn't have to make/buy one more thing.

Based on weddings I've been to, I would say there is a problem with rolled out fabric.  If it's on grass or an uneven surface, it tends to move around and bunch up.  It's often white and looks dirty before the ceremony even starts.  High heels catch in them (so do trains and heavy skirts) and pull them up.  Many venues have strict rules about how you secure stuff, so you may not be able to pin it down.  Flowers or petals seem to work better, but it's a different look.  I would go for flowers unless you need to cover a bad floor or something.

I was going to do one with fabric and our monograms. I'm glad I didn't buy it because our church doesn't allow it. I love this one I saw where they put these yellow flowers down. I thought how pretty but the only problem was it would be destroyed once they started walking on it.

We had a burgundy carpet that made up our "aisle" since one had to be created in the hotel ballroom.  I think I had asked for flower petals as well, but I honestly don't remember if they were there. I think they weren't, but it's a nice touch.

My friend who got married last month had a fabric one that was monogramed and it was pinned to the floor so that it didn't move or bunch up like Temurlang mentioned. But her venue allowed for that so it worked for her.

I wanted to have a rolled out fabric aisle runner with rose petals but it will be over the grass so I'm not sure how it will work.

We will have "the red carpet" rolled out for us. Our decorator told us not flower petals because if some escape the carpet, the might get stepped on and the flower petals could potentially stain the hotel's carpet.... we'd get stuck with a big cleaning bill.

Sucks though because I did want flower petals.
