Ring help!

I am trying to convince my boyfriend to buy me a fake ring. Yes, fake.  (He doesn't like the idea and feels cheap.) But, I have issues with the diamond business and REALLY want a man-made or conflict-free diamond.

Anyone have a man-made ring, moissanate (sp?), or something similar? Can you tell a difference? Where can we find one? Any firsthand info will be helpful! Thanks!

What about another gem stone if he is uncomfortable with a "fake" diamond.  There are conflict-free diamonds as well.  I would look into colored gems - they do have white sapphires and other stones.
  • I waited for my ring for 9 years and I have to tell you I looked at the cheaper alternatives....Yes you can tell the difference unless you spend as much as you would on a diamond, best thing research, research, research, try not to go to the big chains go through the smaller jewellers and question everything... The biggest problem is that once its a cut stone you cannot be guarranteed where it came from, again research, research, research. and I agree with bbyckes there are so many alternatives that you can have, like what is your favorite stone, mine is tanzinite and if I couldnt have a diamond I would be just as happy with that...or ( I live in Canada) Canadian Diamonds are a good choice too

If you run around calling it a "Fake" then of course he's going to feel cheap.  Use your words, honey.  Stop calling it fake and start calling it "conflict-free" or "lab-created" or whatever else there is to call the alternatives you're looking at.

My diamond was taken from my great-grandmother's ring.  Any family heirlooms you can use?

Gemstones and non-diamond erings are WAY common now.  If I wasn't using mine for sentimental reasons I would have wanted onyx.

I have a moissanite rather than a diamond.  For FI and I, it was a financial and superficial decision.  I wanted a big, beautiful ring, and didn't want to start our married life in debt.

It is one of the best decisions we've ever made.  A lot of people think that moissanite is a 'fake' diamond, or a diamond substitute.  In reality, it is a mineral that naturally grows in the earth.  It is slightly harder than a diamond, has more sparkle and brilliance than a diamond, and can take the heat required to be set into fine jewelry.  Moissanite can easily be created in a lab, which makes it affordable and ensures a clear stone.

And here's a photo of my ring:

I thought about moissanite, white sapphire, and various shades of topaz. Like you I didn't want to support the diamond industry. FMIL offered diamonds from an antique family ring, and we took them to a local jeweler. If you don't have any heirlooms you could try looking in a pawn shop or antique store.
  • If he really wants a diamond, and you want it to be conflict free, try looking into some of the canadian ones.
  • There are a lot of places that have conflict free diamonds...

This one has a lot of beautiful rings:

Due to the Kimberly Process its actually fairly difficult to buy a "blood diamond" nowadays and many reputable retailers have a conflict-free guarantee on all of their diamonds.  If it'll really make you feel better, you can always get a Canadian or Australian diamond (or lab grown stone).  Also, natural colored stones (sapphires, rubies, emerald) are not necessarily conflict free just because they aren't diamonds. It really all depends on the country, and more specifically, the mine, that any stone comes from (i.e. I wouldn't EVER buy a sapphire/ruby that was mined in Burma).

Apollo Diamond specializes in lab grown diamonds (chemically identical to mined diamonds).  You and your boyfriend may want to look into it: https://www.shopapollo.com/

I have seen some moissanite jewelry and although its very sparkly, I always seem to notice a gray/green tint to it.  Its more convincing than a CZ though.

  • Dear Miss,

You do not need a stone at all.  Just wear a band and avoid all "conflict".
