reception & food

So please don't think I'm horrible for even thinking these things.  We've had some unforseen issues come up & the catering we were planning on is now way way way out of our new budget.  So my question... what are you doing for catering?  Anyone having something other than a buffet &/or sit down meal?  anyone not doing any food?  FI really wants to get an estimate from his friend who owns a pizza place.  Yes they have amazing pizza...but do I want pizza for our wedding reception?  What would people think? (I know I'm not supposed to care but I do)  We didn't want to stick our family with cooking & food related jobs ect, but maybe we'll have to.  Any tips or suggestions?

Re: reception & food

  • We're doing a buffet.  We have to use the cook at the venue.
I see nothing wrong with pizza at a wedding.  That actually sounds awesome to me.  I would honestly think that was cool and unique if I saw that.  You could have several different options then with toppings.  If you add a salad and one pasta choice you could do a pizza buffet.  Is that an option for your friend's pizza place?   I think I'm going to agree with your FI on this, it's worth looking into at the very least.

  • What is your venue like? What time is your wedding?

Have you talked to your caterer? I'm assuming you already made a deposit with them.

I think if you have your reception during meal time you do need to serve a full meal.  I suppose pizza would count.  As a guest I probably wouldn't think twice if it was served at a park or really casual setting, but I would definitely side eye it if you are in a fancier venue.

</div><div>All of these questions are important to consider.  If your wedding is at a fancier venue, could you move up the ceremony time and just do a cake + drinks reception not at a meal time?</div><div>
</div><div>I'm sorry that this happened so close to the wedding date.  Good luck OP!

Yes they have pasta & really good salads actually.  We've ordered just salads from the before.

  • No I definately wouldn't call our reception venue "fancy".  Those places were all way out of our price range to begin with.  We did not put down a deposit, they said they don't do catering often so they would only need a month's notice & we'd be written down for the date.

  • If you feel like pizza has a stigma you could stray completely away from it too.  You could do just salads and pasta.  Honestly, I see nothing wrong with pizza at a wedding, but I understand your fears on it.  Get an estimate for all possibilities, it never hurts to know your options.

  • I think pizza would be okay! I love pizza! lol. But we are doing a delicious bbq place named whitts. It's about $4.00 a person for bbq pork or chicken and two sides if you want to pick up the food (but then you have to find a way to keep it warm, etc), but it's around $7.50 a person if they come out and serve it. If they serve it, they also bring tea and lemonade as well as the chafing dishes and tables. That's what we're choosing to do. We're also going to have both the pork and chicken which brings it to about $9 a person. I don't know if this is close to your price range, but it seemed to be fairly standard among a lot of bbq places we checked. Just an idea :)

  • Honestly, given a lot of "wedding venue food", a lot of times, I'd be happier with pizza. ;) Just like PPs are saying, make sure you can make it work with the overall feeling of your venue.

  • Were doing the food ourselves....with the help of a few people for certain things. A guy is cooking our bbq with the help of FI and his Dad. Were getting some sides from a restaurant in town...cole slaw and potato salad. Were going to make some baked beans and maybe macaroni...my cousin offered to cook macaroni...just not sure if I want to let her. We'll also get some bread probably light bread from the big bakery in Columbus that makes it and its cheaper to buy direct. My aunt is also making our wedding cake as well so its definately cutting costs.

I'm in Indiana ladies in small town area's I'll be honest my reception is at an American Legion.  Its definately a nicer one though, in my opinion.  This is a portion of the room.  The lighter wood is the dance floor area (sorry blurry phone pic)... nothing too fancy, maybe pizza would work...

  • I think if you want to do pizza and its good pizza then do it! It's you and your FI's wedding and you two should make the best decision for you guys.

We are having a grilled cheese bar. We're providing meats and cheeses and bread of a few varieties and letting people put what they want on their sandwhich and then my mom and step-dad are cooking them for everyone. Then were making a few sides the day before the wedding.

  • It's your wedding if you want to do pizza and you know it is delicious I say go for it.  I would also 'fancy' it up with salad and some pasta.  You can always talk to your FI's friend and get an estimate from him and what he would suggest you serve without making a final decision.

  • I think if you offer pasta and salad, it could work.

and also be sure to ditch the pizza boxes and have it trayed up to look a little fancier.
