Your Wedding Cake

Did anyone do a non-fondant wedding cake? It seems like every baker I speak to makes me feel like I'm totally skimping if I don't do a fondant cake.
But honestly, we don't like the taste of fondant at all. We have had it from 3 different bakers and just think it's gross! Not to mention just for the fondant plain adds $300-$400 to our cake.
We are hoping to get a red velvet cake from The Petite Cafe but they need to do a different frosting than usual & she kinda explained to me that it may not look perfect - that she mainly does fondant cakes....
Does anyone have pics or recommendation of places?

Our cake is not fondant and we are using Palermo's Bakery in Ridgefield Park http://palermobakery.com/

I highly recommend them- and they were great to work with at the tasting and did not pressure us to use fondant whatsoever. Our cake was included in our hall so I cannot comment on the cost.

In my opinion, fondant tastes like ass.  I definitely prefer buttercream or a cream cheese frosting, but (and correct me if I'm wrong) I think a lot of cake shops prefer the fondant because it's easier to work with and to smooth out any imperfections and it's easier to transport (whereas buttercream can easily get a nick or a not-so-smooth line and once you try to fix one section that could make another section look uneven and so on).

I'd say go for whatever you prefer the taste of, which obviously isn't fondant for you.  I, for one, prefer taste over a completely flawless appearance.

Have you tried Palermo's?  I've heard great reviews about them.

We also used Palermo's Bakery and Only did fondant on the brown strip on the bottom.  This was our cake inspired completely by something I saw on TK.  Here it is:
The rest was butter cream and it was delicious.

The basic was included, but we didn't like the basic ones.  I PMed you the extra cost, I don't really like to post amounts on the board.

I am not doing fondant....I hate the taste of it and the fact that it is lard and sugar. I am doing whipped cream, but it is included in the price.

We didn't do fondant.  I'd rather have it taste great.

I agree with the girls who went with Palermo's.  We are getting our cake from them and are doing an english butter cream on the outside.  Very pretty...and did not taste gross.  The cakes and fillings they gave us to try were really, really good.  I highly suggest the dark chocolate cake with the chocolate filling.  Or the white cake with the french cream and fresh strawberries.  I was a huge fan of the lemon filling too.

our cake was included with the price at the venue, and that did not include fondant...we would have had to pay extra for it, which is fine since mh does not like fondant (i could care less, just take it off and eat the cake)
ironically enough, mil got a groom's cake (from the same bakery) and got it with fondant....guess she didn't know her son's distaste for the stuff....
i think our cake looked fantastic with just buttercream

it was from brother's bakery in kearny

Our cake was from Palermo's also....and we didn't want fondant, but wanted the sleek look of fondant. They used buttercream and and we loved it...both the look and the taste.  It was included with our venue and we did not have to pay any extra (we provided the ribbon and brooches ourselves).

ETA:  Two of our layers were Red Velvet with cream cheese filling, so not sure why she's saying she can't do buttercream.

Mine was included in my venue- but I did buttercream and also had red velvet. Don't know why she thinks it would look bad?

We didnt have fondant.  I also got the cheapest cake the venue offered.  I dont think any of my guests noticed or cared.  The cake wasnt the most gorgeous cake I have ever seen.  It was very plain but it looked good enough for its 5 minutes of glory and it tasted delicious.

Sounds to me like she wants to take the easy way out with the fondant.  Buttercream can cover any type of cake, it just takes several layers.

I'm also going with Palermo's (package with the venue) and we're getting buttercream, it def. tastes better and looks prettier in my opinion :)
