ATTN Catholic wedding brides

Did you have to provide "current" records of your sacraments to the church you are getting married in?

FI and I are getting married in my church (I did all of my sacraments at this church) so all of my records are on file.  We just sent over copies of FI's sacrament certificates, which is what our priest told us to do, and I got a call from the head secretary saying they need a "current" Baptismal record... apparently the church you get baptized in is supposed to keep records of every sacrament you receive?  FI received all of his sacraments in different churches.

Anyone else have to deal with this?  I'm so confused.  This was supposed to have been done 4 months ago but no one ever informed us of this.  Our priest is a total space cadet.

Yes. Ours had to be "issued" within the last 6-9 months. The reason they do this is to confirm that you're not already married (so it needs to be recent). It's actually really easy to get this done, though.

Our church told us this: "Please remember your certificates need to be recent copies, that is, not older than 6-9 months.  If you have the original certificate at the time of the sacrament, those are not acceptable.  To obtain recent copies, call the church where you were baptized and/or confirmed and request the certificates for marriage and the secretary will take it from there."

Edited to add: I was able to get certificates that same week from the church at which I was baptized, received First Communion and was confirmed, and these were 3 different churches. They are used to these types of requests, so they just fill out a form and send it to you with a current date for the issuance and the date on which you received the sacrament.

  • wow....I am REALLY glad my Presbyterian church doesn't require this stuff....it sounds complicated and intense!!
  • Yup we also had to do this.  All you need to do is have FI give each church a call asking about my baptism records for so and so and then you can pick them up or I am sure ask them to be mailed to you.
  • Thanks, girls!  The way the secretary explained it to me was just so confusing.

I was also told we might be double-booked for our rehearsal since they can't keep their records straight.  I booked the wedding/rehearsal in March 2011.  UGH.

  • That is SO frustrating that they double booked. Do you have any email traffic or confirmation of your time? UGH. Catholic churches are such a pain sometimes.

  • Yes, we had to do this also. I got mine in like a week but it had to be issued like bride said within 6 months.

  • I had to do the same thing.  I got them in to him almost a year ago, and he never said anything. It was easy to request, I just hope I don't have to re-request it.  I have to call the church anyways this week because we were supposed to get a call in April from the wedding lady and she never called.

No, my church is pretty behind on technology so they do phone only.  The secretary said she put me in for the 6:00pm/day before rehearsal time slot, but thinks the other couple may be under the impression that it's their time slot, as well.  She said we booked almost a year prior to them so we get first pick... so we'll see what happens....

  • I don't really have anything to add, just that I've had the same experience as others- it took less than a week for mine to arrive in the mail from where I was baptized. All the other sacrement documentation can be photocopies.

  • Phew. At least you get the slot! Hopefully you won't have to get into a fight with the other bride when she finds out her rehearsal isn't when she thinks . . . lol

If you do end up needing backup in the fight, let me know. I am ok with being paid in strawberries. :)

  • Can you imagine?

I'm standing in the church and the other bride and her "crew" walk in... I got my "crew" behind me.... out of the shadows walks in bridetobe: "PROBLEM?"  Other bride relents and they walk out because of the extreme intimidation.  Bridetobe is handed bushel of strawberries.
