There was definitely a mix.  A lot of our vendors required final payment before the wedding, so with those we used credit cards.  If you have a credit card that offers rewards / points / cash back, then that's definitely another pro to using your card...

Photographer and Officiant didn't need final payment until the day of, so for those we paid cash.  I do have to say that it's nice to have everything done ahead of time so that you don't have to worry about it the day of - especially since you're still dealing with tips the day of as well.

I don't have any tips about airfare, sorry.

I paid nearly all of our vendors in advance by credit card because I wanted to not have to worry about who's getting paid on wedding day and how much, did I pay them, etc.  I did take a big folder with all the contracts and receipts out with us to make sure I had all those records.  Scheme Events knew who we still needed to pay in cash on wedding day so they took care of making sure I got the rest of them.

What I did do was make the mistake of switching from Amex to the Southwest rewards card (issued through Chase for those who hate Chase) right before I started the process of paying everyone.  I did that because I figured I get the equivalent of about 1.6% cash (in airline points) from that card's rewards system that I'd actually use since we fly Southwest a lot, and Amex was only giving me about the equivalent of 1%.  Well, I cancel the Amex as soon as the new one arrives without having read the paperwork...  Chase gave me a card with a limit about a fourth of my Amex.  It ended up being a two month nightmare of having to pay a vendor, then wait for the charge to clear (up to four days), pay off the card (another day or two), pay another vendor, repeat.  Or in some cases like the venue, I had to ask them to charge only portions of the outstanding balance, pay it off, do it again, etc.  It was really embarassing and pissed me off.  Even after all of this is over, I sent them an email and said look guys, I've charged my card up to the limit and paid it off eight or nine times in the past three months; is that enough to satisfy you that I can take care of my obligation so you can give me a usable limit?  NO.  So F Chase but I'm going to tough it out because I do like all the Southwest points I'm getting.  Maybe they'll bless me with a real limit next year.

We paid the majority of our vendors off ahead of time (within 2 weeks of the wedding).  We opened a separate bank account through BOA and got mileage points for everything we paid for.  We didn't want to use credit cards to pay for anything, but those were for when we got to Vegas for hotel, car rental, bunch of little stuff.

I would set up alerts if you haven't already done so and just keep checking, but buying earlier might end up being cheaper.

We were able to pay Francesca via credit card through PayPal in advance and just the part that went to her assistant in cash day-of; in case anyone else wants to do the same to get reward points. :-)

We paid everything in advance on credit cards so
A.) We earned points on the cc
B.) We didn't want to worry about anything but tips the day of.

The only exception was MUA. I paid Melissa the depoist via paypal and paid the rest in cash on the day of.

I think I saw that Frontier was having a birthday sale. You might check them out. If you buy economy plus (the middle range) your baggage is included as well as satellite t.v.

Empeques... did you set up alerts through Yapta.com? There was a HUGE (64%) price drop for our MKE-LAS flights at about 7 months prior on Delta that lasted for only about 20 hours.

I am for paying ahead of time.  The tips were enough to worry about for me.  I only had the DJ and Bella Brides to pay in cash day of.

Airfarewatchdog.com is a good fare watch site.

I feel more comfortable paying everyone off a few weeks beforehand so I have less to worry about. And yes, Chase blows.

I love my Chase Sapphire.    I have never had problems with my card and certainly hope that my wedding wouldn't cost more than my limit. I have a great travel points program and a generous credit limit.

I plan to pay all vendors who will accept credit cards with my CC.  Those who don't, I'll pay cash the day of.  I'll also have all my tip envelopes with cash as well. I don't like to pay fees with PayPal so I will only use it if the vendor pays the fees.  I'm planning to pay Francesca the day of.

Just an FYI about Frontier. Their customer service SUCKS!

We booked a roundtrip from Appleton-Denver for September about 2 months ago.  I recently got an email from them saying to call their customer service line because our itinerary has changed. I have called numerous times (at all different times of day) and each time the operator told me I would be on hold for aprox. 30 minutes...with a 7 month old I can't be sitting on hold like that!

Anyway, I think they cancelled many of their direct service flights from rural communities. I will probably have to be re-routed through Chicago or something (Ugh!!) and would prefer to go on Delta to earn more pionts, but because Frontier
was offering direct I booked with them instead.

    Stupid Frontier.

Just to throw it out there and show another side, I actually love frontier.

I'm sorry you had bad service Camille. I've flown them four or five trips and have had excellent service each time. I haven't had a late flight, in flight chocolate chip cookies are excellent, and I like paying for my baggage upfront.

My business partner bought a re-hab vacation house in Colorado and her and her husband were doing all the work on it themselves so they were flying regularly between Tampa and Denver on Frontier.  Her husband would take random tools he'd need in his luggage like cordless drills, etc.  Well, one of their trips they get back and all the power tools are missing from the luggage.  They tried to get Frontier to look into it since it was a few grand worth of tools; it took a month or two of getting told by every person there, if you could actually speak to someone, that it was someone else they needed to talk to before they gave up and filed a police report as theft.  The police got them in touch with the TSA who, conveniently, had a video recording of the bag coming through the TSA inspection area, being opened by a TSA staffer, the tools were taken out, inspected, put back in and then the bag re-locked and sent on its way to the Frontier baggage handlers.

So they now have video evidence that the tools existed to begin with, were still in the bag after TSA inspected it and then put on the cart to go to the plane meaning the only person who could have stolen the tools was a Frontier baggage handler in Denver during loading or Tampa during unloading.  They presented that to Frontier and the airline still told them too bad, we don't cover anything but clothing.  So video evidence that their employees stole something wasn't good enough for them to lift a finger.  Police couldn't do anything since the evidence doesn't show who took the tools.  Probably could have gone the small claims route but who has the time for that.  Only thing she got out of the whole ordeal is Amex cut her a check for $500 since they include that level of insurance on your belongings if you purchased the ticket on an Amex card and the airline won't reimburse you for a loss.

VG, that story is ridiculous.  I'm amazed at the lack of customer service the airline industry shows.  I was yelled at by an agent once (because she put the wrong sticker on my bag and was planning to route it North Carolina, when I was going to Minnesota)... and all I recieved was a $100 voucher.

Also, my random thoughts for the day:

-I hope we can make this one part of our budget work for something I really want to upgrade.  I KNOW it'll be worth it....

-I think I want to stay at the Signature for our wedding, even though it'll be a PITA to walk/drive to MB for the ceremony.

-I want to be in Vegas now.
