Off Topic...Dress Issues

Hey guys, so this post is off topic, but I feel more comfortable asking it here than on the other boards.

I am going in to David's Bridal on Friday to try on some dresses. I've looked at their website a TON this past week, and wrote down a few of the gowns I definitely want to try on. The problem is, I am having a really hard time visualizing myself in these dresses. At first, I thought maybe I was just looking at the wrong type of style, but even when looking at different syles, I'm not feeling it. Also, I feel really anxious about going to try them on..I have no idea what's going on with me...does anyone else feel this way?

  • Ya won't know till you try them on! I have some of the most ridiculous photos of me goofing off in dresses I thought looked just plain hideous. It made for a fun day :P
Don't take the dress shopping too seriously, or you may end up stressed and hating everything, or jumping the gun on a dress you end up not caring for later. It's okay that you can't visualize yourself in the dresses... That's why you go shopping in person ;)

Also, every DB is different, but I went to a HORRIBLE one and the lady was sooo pushy. I came in with pictures style numbers, and tried on maybe 2 of the dresses I asked to try on. And she kept complaining the whole time that H was there with me. Just don't let them fast talk you into a dress you're not crazy about. It can't hurt to try on styles you're not sure about.. but if you feel even a LITTLE pushed about buying a dress. DON'T BUY. Think on it for a couple days and then go back. They aren't going anywhere :)
  • Don't worry about it. I didn't want to go dress shopping at all (especially with the large number of people that insisted upon coming with me) because I didn't think I would look good in anything.

I looked great in lots of things. Some dresses looked bad, but really most of them were good. My advice is to keep trying different styles until you find one that you think flatters you most, then try more dresses in that style!

And remember, you are not the problem when a dress doesn't flatter you. The dress is the problem. :)

  • Just go and have fun - try on things you think you might hate, you never know!

Bring reference photos of stuff you think you like as well, the consultant will then be able to track down dresses that have the same look/feel.

  • Thanks guys, this makes me feel better. I was thinking the same thing - maybe I will change my mind once I actually have them on. @ftl, thanks, that is good advice also...I don't think I'll make any decisions on Friday unless I try something on and know it's "the one"...and if our lady is pushy, I'll just plain walk out. I really dislike it when people try to sell you something for their own benefit, vs. what looks great on you or works for you. Drives me nuts!

  • Be open to trying all different styles. I managed a bridal salon (back in the day), and it always amazed me the number of people who had a predetermined style in mind and refused to budge. They 'settled' because they refused to try anything outside their vision.

Trust your consultant. They spend their entire life putting people in dresses, but at the same time, don't let them pressure you. You will know when it's THE dress.

    Trust me. You'll know.

    have fun with it!

  • Don't worry about it and enjoy! You don't have to buy a dress that day, and what I love about DB is that you can take photos of yourself in all the dresses you try on, so you can look them over back home. I went into DB to try on two dresses I fell in love with on their website - it turns out they look awful on me (ok, not awful, but they weren't anything special) and I ended up going with a ball gown - never a silhouette I thought I'd go with. So don't worry and enjoy!

FWIW my exprience at DB was great. The sales lady wasn't pushy at all, and I love their no frils approach. I don't need the "Kleinfeld experience.". :-)
  • @unchatenrance Yeah, me either! Haha...as long as I look great in the dress I could care less who designed it! :) I am always astounded at the amount of money brides spend on a dress they will wear one time. I mean, I guess if you have the money then you can spend it however you please...but since we are paying for our wedding ourselves, I plan on trying to find something bautiful, but affordable.

  • Have fun with it!  Ditto to pretty much everything ftl says - and DO NOT buy on the first day!  If it is the one, you can call the next day and order it too, just sleep on it for a night.  I ended up with two dresses because of that disaster, and because everything looked better on me than I thought it would thanks to working out...
I went in to DB first, and told the lady I wanted to try on literally one of every style, and she was fine with it.  I think it was the best way to actually see everything and start narrowing down.

And don't be afraid to AW some funny or gorgeous pics with us! :)

  • Geez, I think my keyboard needs new batteries! Haha...I am always missing a letter or two in my posts. Or maybe I need to type slower.

  • OMG YES pleeeease be an AW. Take a picture of yourself in every single dress. We want to seee!

Same with lobster... I have two wedding gowns in this house, because of buying on the first day.. fail. lol

  • I will take pics and post them on Monday! :) and I think it is a great idea to sleep on it. So far, My mom, both my sisters, my FMIL and FSIL will be there...so no a huge group, but not a small group either. I just hope that nobody is too opinionated...know what I mean? I would hate to put something on and love it, but then get a weird or nasty look from one of them and it make me reconsider.

  • As an aside - I never had that "OMG THIS IS THE ONE" moment...I went back and forth on a couple of different dresses and then chose one. It was just a dress for me, I didn't get the least bit emotional....so be prepared. If you try on a bunch of dresses and aren't getting the feeling, you may need to approach it more logically like "does this flatter me, is it in my price point, will FI think I look stunning, will I feel beautiful walking down the aisle" etc.

  • I went to DB with a set idea of what I wanted. I wanted a tea lenght dress well tried on the first and was like ugh tried on the second was still ugh tried on the thrid and was getting upset. (In the past couple of  years I gained a lot of weight so shopping is not fun for me.) The girl had brought 2 longer dresses and I was like what the hell I don't want a gown but I tried one on and hated it and my MOH said "Just try this what can it hurt" by that time I was just getting upset and frustrated but huffed into the long lacey gown... I didn't cry or really feel like OMG this is it but for some reason it just felt right. Of course my mom, MOH and future Mom in law (I hate the word Mother) could not stop saying how pretty it was! And to think I saw it hanging and was mad that the girl would bring me this long gown when it wasn't what I was even looking for. She explained she noticed I was drawn to lace so figured I might like it. Guess the point is to try stuff on even if you don't think you will like it.

  • Also, I know DB has some great prices, but I've heard from friends that some of the other local salons had nicer dresses at the same price points compared to DB. Might be worth checking out some non-DB places even though you're trying not to spend a ton

  • There's nothing wrong with going to a few different salons if you're not feelin it there--tells you what works for you as we'll as what does not. I went the etsy route ultimately, there is some gorgeous stuff on there, most of it can be made custom to your measurements for a reasonable price which is awesome.
