Question for Ohio ladies...

To any brides from Ohio....

I have a friend in MN who just got a job at a school in the Cleveland/Lakewood area... would any of you ladies happen to know what are good areas around there to live in and what areas would be good to avoid?  If so, any specific suggestions?  I'm considering posting on the local board, too... but thought I'd check here first since so many of you seem to be from OH :-)  TIA!

Lakewood itself is great- with lots of "doubles" & apartments.   There is a fairly lively nightlife & many recent college grads live there.  I have a niece who lives in Ohio City & loves it (but some of the area might be a little dicey).   I had friends who lived in Tremont, too.

I have found that quite a few people on the local boards are anti-Cleveland itself- fyi!
    You have a PM, too.

I hate when people say they hate Cleveland! haha Strongsville is nice, but pretty far. FI and I just looked at homes there and loved the area! I would go with Lakewood though, it's close and has some pretty nice. Stay away from (IMO) any place like Garfield Heights. neighborhoods

Someone a few months back asked where to go if they went there for a weekend trip.   Someone replied and said "they wouldn't go in the first place, I hate Cleveland."   In a followup, she said that she grew up in the 'burbs and never went to the city.   How can you hate something if you don't know anything about it??  I only left b/c of grad school and then happened to meet someone here. We go back often & I still love it.  The parks are amazing,  it has good museums, a great zoo,  sports, good restaurants & easy commutes!

I grew up in Toledo, Ohio but DH's family lives in that area.

His mom is in Vermilion, and he has aunts in Lorain & Sheffield Lake, which is not too far from Lakewood (I don't think).  I like those towns, personally.  They're right on the water, they're quaint.  The cost of living is pretty cheap.

I've never been to Lakewood, so I can't compare.

Sorry I'm late to the convo - on our slightly delayed honeymoon :). Anyway, how old is she? Single or married? Are there any kids in the mix? And do you know about how much she's looking to spend per month? (I'm on another forum called Urban Ohio and we get a lot of relocation questions :))

She's 28, single, no kids and probably wouldn't want to spend more than $600-$700/month?  I think her rent right now is around $600 for a 1br in a slightly sketchy suburb of the Twin Cities... so I'm just comparatively guessing what she might be shooting for cost-wise right now!  The school she'll be teaching at is St. Edward's in Lakewood.

She could easily rent a 2 BR in Lakewood for $600-700!   I don't know anyone who teaches at Ed's, but know plenty at it's rival school.

I can also tell her which bars to avoid to avoid seeing the older students who may be out underage :)

Okay, so she's priced out of downtown with that price range.  If she wants more of a walkable neighborhood, Ohio City and Tremont are both vibrant small neighborhoods in Cleveland proper.  Lakewood is the first suburb to the west of Cleveland, so a car is a little more necessary there.  I guess it depends on what she wants and what she's more used to.  But she should be able to find something in her price range in any of those neighborhoods without a problem.  Tell her to check Craigslist, because a lot of the apartments are duplex-type arrangements as opposed to huge complexes that would actually have their own websites.  And send her to the Urban Ohio forum (it's not my site, no worries :)).  I am under the same username over there, however, however, and if she wants to PM me, that's fine, and it will actually send me an e-mail, lol, so no callouts are ever done there.  The people there are awesome, and they can answer any questions (even down to "I found a place on x street between y and z streets - is this an okay part of the 'hood?")  It will also be a great resource for her if she doesn't know much about Cleveland or anyone here.  There are boards for developments and events, so she can find out anything about Cleveland (or other Ohio cities) she wants to know there.
