Lent

Is anyone giving anything up for lent?

I think, this year, instead of giving something up, I am going to DO something to better myself!

I think I am going to force myself  to read 5 of the articles on the nytimes front page every morning. (I am SOOOO bad with knowing what is going on in the world)

What are you guys doing?

Re: Lent

  • this is terrible, but since moving in with Dan I've pretty much stopped going to church. i just find other things to do on sunday and justify it that way. so for lent, i'm going to go to church every week. i'm hoping it helps me set a pattern of going all the time.

before i lived with dan, i went pretty much every weekend with my dad, so i think the past 6 months have been the longest stretch for me ever of not going.
    Happily married since 9/1/2012!

  • I was debating giving up dessert.  I'm completely addicted to ice cream and eat it all the time.  I figured it would be a good thing bc it'll help jump start my getting in shape for the wedding AND it's going to be super hard bc I love it.  The bad thing about Lent (and was especially hard when I was a kid) is that my bday falls in the middle of it.  It sucks to skip all the cake but making an exception for my bday makes me feel bad!  Good ole Catholic guilt :-)
  • I like your idea, cpasquale, to start doing something to better yourself.  I'm going to steal it and use lent as my motivation to workout everyday when I get home from work.

  • My goal for lent is to do a random act of kindness for someone every day for 40 days. It can be something like bring their garbage bin from the curb to their garage or pay for the coffee order of the person behind me in line :P
I'm not really giving anything up, but just giving others something extra; doing something different this year.

My sister gave up Facebook - OH.MY.LORD. Now THAT would sacrifice lol

  • I'm not religious, but I always like to give something up during lent b/c I guess it's a convenient time. But I like to give it up for good and make it a positive life style change! I've given up smoking one year and also caffeine another year. The caffeine was extemely tough, but I have a heart condition so I really shouldn't be smoking or having caffeine anyway. I haven't decided about this year yet. My other vices are chocolate and alcohol. I was thinking about giving up chocolate because I don't really eat any other desserts and I can go a little nuts with chocolate.

  • mama, like your idea!

I'm giving up fried foods. They're my Achilles Heel, I'd rather have french fries, chips, etc. than chocolate cake. So I'm hoping my Lent sacrafice will continue after Easter =]

  • Breakfast sandwiches. They are my downfall every monring at work. Its stupid of me to pay the price the cafeteria asks, and I prolly should watch what I eat. I always intend to give something up but the days go by so fast and I am so busy, I always miss when it starts. Suddenly its a week into Lent and Im like "Wait WHAT!"

My friend is doing that this year, she did it last year but didn't mention it to everyone and people were like "where the f*** did Meg go?" But she made it.

I'm giving up Pepsi- Its the only soda I drink and my only form of caffeine (unless I have a cup of tea). I did it last year and went through withdrawl.

I also include something good into the 40 days each year, hoping it will stick, and this year I promised my dog our walks together will be longer, and daily, I won't leave it to FI as much.
  • I'm not Catholic, and have never been very religious, so I've never given anything up.  I do like the random acts of kindness and bettering myself though!

Good luck to those who are participants.

Just because you saw it on Four Weddings, doesn't mean it's a good idea.

<div>One of my friends did that last year, until she revealed that she cheated about halfway through. </div><div>
</div><div>I'm thinking of giving up sweets for Lent. Like the PP said, I have a horrible sweet tooth and it will be super hard, but it will help me shed pounds for the wedding. Will power, please guide me! Hahaha!</div>
