I need some REAL help here ladies... (long)

So FI and I did some serious talking and we decided that I will be going back to school to get my bachelors, that way I can finally get a job in a field doing what I really want to be doing. In the meantime I will be working part time and if I can manage to bring in between $500 - $1000 a month in income, we'll be able to continue living like we are right now.... except:

This means I can no longer afford the wedding and/or honeymoon we were initially anticipating. We are ok with this considering the fact that we are both on our second marriage and already had a "big" wedding the first time. We are talking about backing out of the contract with the venue (hoping desperately that they will consider giving us back our deposit) and having the wedding here at my home. This has me questioning the whole "theme" of color and look I was going for.

My theme was initially going to be modern and elegant, apple green and charcoal grey. You all may remember my mock-up of the tables at the venue:

But my house is in no way elegant or modern enough and would look better with a rustic theme which is what I was originally planning on for our rehearsal dinner that was going to be at my house.

FI thinks its fine to keep the look of the green & grey and to use the same tablescape I was planning and use it at our home instead. I just cant see if it will look good. Here is a picture of my backyard which is really open and pretty much a "blank slate".

So my question to you all is.... what do you think? I could probably return most of the linens and chargers I bought for my green & grey theme and get my money back. I already started procuring round lanters and vases (all bought second hand) for use in the outdoor space that were in yellow, orange, pink (spring colors) and planned on using those colors combined with maybe a light green for the rehearsal dinner "look". Do you think I should stick with the green & grey, trying to keep it modern or should I embrace the "rustic" vibe of the house and go with what I had been planning for the rehearsal dinner?

I could really use your input here!

  • Honestly, I can see it either way. I don't look at the gray and green and think modern. I think it would be perfectly fine to keep it as is. If you wanted to switch, I would still keep the green and just change the tablecloths...but I like it how you have it. The gray looks shimmery and I think that would especially be beautiful in the sun outside. If you wanted a rustic touch, I vote for rustic centerpieces, but leave the rest the same.

  • While it will be a pain to have to return stuff, I really think the rustic look would look great for a back yard type wedding. I like the pictures you have of your RD ideas.

  • I don't think either way would be a bad decision. I'd set up your original tablescape outside and see how you like it before you make a decision. Just to keep your stress to a minimum, I'd try using as much of everything you've got in your decor.
