FMIL vent

My FI and his mom went to Costco today, and while they were out, his mom brought up our gift registry. We have a set of 4 champagne flutes on there with a beautiful design from BBB. They're about $14 a flute, if I remember correctly. She said to him "Do you HAVE to have the design, because I saw the same but cheaper and plain at Gordon's Food Service". Really? If I wanted cheap, plain ones, I would of registered for cheap, plain ones. Not really sure why this is so difficult for people lol. No one said she had to buy all 4. My FI is all irritated because he thinks his mom is being an ass considering she can't spend $30 on glasses when she's not even contributing a dime to this wedding.

Re: FMIL vent

  • Do I ever hear you. I have had the same from my FMIL. I registered for an ironing board. She didnt want to spend the $30 it cost. So instead she bought me one for $17. It makes me sad when my 22 year old cousin who goes to school spends more on me than my FMIL who is a retired teacher with a huge pension.
I get it is up to her to spend her money how she wants, but it still sucks.

  • Yesterday I was shopping with FMIL and FSIL for a top for the wedding and everything we got her she said was too fancy and wanted to go to Walmart. This is your youngest sons wedding and you wanna go to Walmart for your outfit? If that was all she could afford it would be different but since I know how much money she has in the bank then I think spending 50 on something she can wear again is reasonable. Sorry FMIL's are being a pain!!
  • I could definitely see FI's grandmother (FFIL's mother) buying us crap for our wedding that is nothing from our registry. I don't understand why people do this. It's kind of like when people ask you what you want from your registry... um everything?

  • I've gotten a few comments on my towel selection similarly with people suggesting they'd buy me the cheaper set. I want to be like I have MULTIPLE things on there for under $20 to fit everyone's price range, how hard is it for you to just pick one of those!!
I am truly blessed to have an awesome FMIL. So sorry for all of the drama you guys are experiencing!!

  • My FMIL is a nice lady other wise. Just lacks some serious common sense. Both her and my FIs dad are ... I don't know how to explain them. His dad wants to come to the wedding in a tuxedo shirt... as in a shirt with a tuxedo printed on it. I seriously think I just may lose it in this next month or so.
  • This is the precise reason FI and I didn't do a registry no gifts.  We just didn't want to deal with all these dumb questions, becuase we've seen enough people getting married how have had the same sentiment.   YUCK  sorry you all are going through this.
