new to the board! venue sites?

hello ladies! My name is Kaitlyn, and i'm pretty new to this whole thing. My fiancee and i got engaged on valentines day of this year and are planning a june, 2011 wedding!

I'm looking at venue sites and am just doing the ceremony AT the reception site, since religion isn't a big thing to either of us.

I have a few appointments to look at a few different banquet halls, but I feel like if I only look at four or five that I'm going to make an "uneducated" decision. My FI has given me complete and total control over planning because he thinks it will be easier that way, and he really just wants to see me happy :)

Anybody have any ideas of places i could look?? Any advice would be appreciated! thanks!

Hi!  Welcome and Congrats on your engagement!  i'm an old married knottie now.  What part of the state are you looking to get married in?  If you are upstate, then there are a ton of places.  Let's see...
The Farmhouse (i'm biased because i got married there)
    Christiana Hilton
    U of De
    Executive Banquet Center
    Waterfall Ballroom and Banquet Center
    Harry's Savoy Ballroom
    Deerfield Country Club
    Mendenhall Inn
    Hartfeld Country Club
    Hotel DuPont
    DuPont Country Club
    and many more
For downstate, the only ones I can think of are...
    The Baycenter
Baywood Greens Country Club (or golf course)
    Salero
    Dover Downs

Congrats on your engagement! I'm from Wilm but live in Delco now - we're having our wedding next year at Kings Mills in Media. It's near the Barnaby's in Aston/Neumann Universityif you're familiar with that area. We haven't had a ton of interaction with them, but they've been quick to return phone calls, emails & the prices are reasonable. I've heard from a lot of people that they had good experiences there. They also have a "chapel" space to do ceremonies (which we're doing) or great views outside if you want to do that.

Hi and welcome!  Congrats on your engagement!  The girls here are awesome; while the board may run a bit slow some days, they are always good about getting back to you with honest, helpful opinions.

I think my first question would be what is your budget?  That will really dictate where you will be able to go.  The next question would be about how many guests you were thinking; that will be the next deciding factor on whether a venue makes the cut.

Where are you thinking about doing it?  Do you want to stay in NCCo?  Are you willing to go to MD, PA, NJ?  Do you want something very formal, something very relaxed and casual, or something in between?  Do you want an inclusive venue (where things like cake, linens, etc are included), or do you want to bring in your own caterer and DIY with a lot of your wedding?

You will want to decide these things quickly and soon, because you will want to book a venue ASAP (it should be the first thing you do, behind the budget and guest estimate), and venues in this area book extremely quickly (for example, I booked my October 2, 2010 wedding in January 2009; we originally wanted Oct 9, but it was already booked!).

Lura gave a great list up above to get started with.  Depending on what you want, there are a couple I would add to the list.  Let us know what you are looking for, and we can help you out from there!

I'd like to either stay between claymont and newark. He has family coming from rising sun, and the less driving the better. Kings mill is amazing, and my sisters sil works there...but its a little too far.

I went to the crystal center today, and think they are pretty awesome... They quoted me WELL within my budget and included the dj and photographer.

    Where is the farmhouse??

The Farmhouse is a VERY small place, near Delaware Park, off of Kirkwood Highway (turn at Retro Fitness, then at light make a left onto Old Capital Trail and it's on your right).  They say you can fit 125, but it's really 100.  I fell in love with it at first sight.  it's very victorian farmhouse-ish.  They include EVERYTHING!  that is what i loved about it, and the prices were great.  I got married outside in October 2009 and it was perfect.  It fit my style completely.  their website is www.thefarmhousede.com
you can view my pictures from there at www.nleafphoto.com, click on proofs at the top, and then click on Lura & Rich.

    I'm on there, too!!

I'm thinking June 18th? Not sure yet, though. Since we haven't booked a site yet, we aren't too attached to any date.

I'm waiting for one more place to call me back so i can look, and then i'm fairly sure I'm going to go with the Crystal center.. or the other place :)

I really wanted to do the ceremony and the reception all at the same site, but most places are charging upward of a thousand extra dollars to do that..and that makes me sad lol.

I would encourage you to look into the Red Clay Room in Kennett Square.  It's run by the same people who do Executive Banquet, very affordable, but the Room has gardens and such while Executive doesn't.

I would also suggest looking at The Stone Barn, also in Kennett.  It's gorgeous- this old rustic barn that's been refurbished.  They also have several different garden spots to choose from for the ceremony which are magnificent- and if it rains, they move it inside in front of this huge awesome stone fireplace.  Also very affordable.

If you don't mind going just south of Chesapeake City, there is The Granary and The Kitty Knight House, both right on Rt 213. They have the same owners, same banquet menus. I am biased because I am getting married at the Kitty Knight but it is a beautiful place and a great deal to boot that not many people know about. The buffet is $24.99/person and then plated entrees run from $22.99 up to $29.99 or so. We are getting married on the deck overlooking the Sassafrass River and then moving inside to the dining room for dinner. They hold 140. And they have 11 sleeping rooms for those that want to stay over!

the granary and kitty knight house arent big enough for my wedding :(

I lived in earleville for a while, so I'm very familiar with the area. FIs family lives in Chesapeake City.

I looked at the executive caterer place, but the stone barn thing sounds pretty too! Thanks ladies! I'm making my decision on Friday!!!

Anyone have more information on Salero?  I have about 180 people.... and I am worried that it will be too crowded?  I'm also new to the board and planning a June 2011 wedding :)

Any info would help :)  Alice
