Wedding Vows & Ceremony Discussions

Country meets City

My wedding is going to be this September and we are trying to keep the budget low and have a pretty intimate wedding with very close friends and family. We have picked our colors as green (kind of a spring green), white and black. My fiance had the good idea of making our ceremony/reception have a country meets city theme because he is from San Diego and my family lives in the country. We are holding everything at my parents house. The wedding will be in the field and the reception will be outside/inside the Morton building we have. I have really cute/good ideas for the country side of things, but am having trouble envisioning how to incorporate the city flair into it without looking like it is clashing. So far the only ideas we've had is to have my side (me, bridesmaids, my mom and dad) wear boots, and for his side to be in sleak black tuxes with green accents. Otherwise I've planned to use old boots as vases and using daisies (white and dyed green) and baby's breath for flowers. Maybe incorporating hay bales into the decor as well. Oh and we are having a picnic reception. Help please!!!!

Re: Country meets City

  • Personally, I don't think the attire will work out well.  Your FI's family will be in formal dress and your family will be wearing boots and casual dress(?).  You just said your family would wear boots, I'm assuming casual dress because FI would be wearing a tux and most formal clothes would cover boots up anyway.

I also would not put old boots to use as vases on the table.  I know I wouldn't want to eat off a table that had an old boot on it.

Since FI is from San Diego, could you bring in San Diego flair?  I know they have the Gas Lamp district, could you perhaps use lanterns for centerpieces.  Serve food that is popular or native to San Diego, etc.
  • "City meets country" sounds like an interesting and fun theme, but I think boots are out of place as centerpieces and as attire.  Tuxes do not go with boots; nor do boots go on tables.

You might try a decorating scheme or menu that reflects your theme instead.
  • I think it's cute that you want to show your personalities in your wedding but people who know you, already know that you're country and he's a city guy. I think the attire will definitely clash, the WP will feel / look out of place with tuxes and boots.

Also, I would find it very rude to have an old boot at the table where I am going to be eating at. I don't like this idea either.

When I think city wedding, I think Romantic, subtle decor. You can also incorporate the "city" theme in your get-away car and food / drinks. Like you can have sweet tea / lemonade and champagne / martinis.
  • Instead of the boots, I would go with mason jars for centerpieces.  That's the only real idea I have b/c I don't know how to mix the two styles.

I also don't like the idea of the different styles of clothing for your side and his. I think it will look like a big mismatch.
What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

I would skip the theme altogether. You have your coordinated wedding colors. You have your venue. Pick some nice decor that matches and you're good.

ETA: I don't like wedding themes, I like wedding inspiration. My "inspiration" is the beach/ocean but there won't be any sea shells. The center pieces will be large bowls of water over round mirrors with floating candles. My primary color is pale blue. But me and my bridesmaids are carrying parasols down the aisle. In other words, I'm not forcing anything.

  • I think its such a cute idea!! However I would be careful in having them clash. If it's possible I would split the room in half and have one side 'country' and the other  'city ' themed. It could look thrown together and people might lose the theme if its thrown all together. I really like the originality and uniqueness of it though.
