Second Dress????

Hey girls!!

So I'm kinda freaking out and would love your thoughts/ideas! I had originally thought that I wanted a 2nd dress for my reception. I've always thought it was a cute idea, but after the reality of buying my first dress, I loved it so much, plus I couldnt' justify spending that kind of money on a dress to wear for only 2 hours, so I just forgot about it. Fast forward to a few weeks ago, I'm at my first dress fitting and my seamstress asks if I have a 2nd dress. I tell her "no", and she says, "I'd recommend that you get one. This is a lot of dress and the last thing you want to do is have your husband and others stepping on it all night". (She is very blunt). The thing is, it kinda is a lot of dress. It is mermaid style, and then at the bottom, flares out into toole, so the bottom is a little poofy, even after being bustled. Plus, my fiance and I definitely love to get down on the dance floor!  We were at a wedding this weekend and because of this,  I was very aware of the close quarters on the dance floor. One of the BM's who was wearing a long dress had someone step on her dress and it ripped, and that wasn't even a puffy dress! But then again, the bride didn't change and she didn't seem to have a problem, although she had a very form fitting, simple fit & flare. I'm freaking out because A., with only a few weeks left, searching for another dress is the LAST thing on my mind, and B., I didn't budget for it since I thought I would no longer be getting one. What do you guys think? Should I suck it up and just buy something? Maybe online? For all you girls out there with bigger, puffier types of dresses, are you changing?
HELP!!!

Re: Second Dress????

  • If it helps, I was in my friend's wedding at the beginning of June, and she also is the type to get out there and dance. She wore a dress that has a similar silhouette to yours (mermaid that's poofy at the bottom) and didn't have any trouble on the dance floor.

Only thing I'll suggest is that your bustle be more than one point, since I had another friend whose bustle got stepped on and ripped while dancing.

  • My dress isn't puffy, but it does have a long train. I figure the bustle will be enough, even if it still drapes a little. I'm not going to get a second dress.

Are you thinking a short & simple dress? Because if so, you could easily get one at Macy's or Kohl's or another department store for ~$50. There are a ton of cute, short lace dresses out there this season, and Kohl's and Macy's both have a lot of stuff on sale.

HERE (clicky!) are a bunch of white dresses from Kohls, HERE are a bunch from Macy's. Hope that helps.
  • My take is that you wouldn't have thought twice about it had your seamstress not brought it up.  Though you considered it at one point, you got past that and LOVE your dress.  You only get to dress up once - wear the dress you LOVE!  Honestly, who cares if it gets stepped on or ripped?  You're not wearing it again.  I would make sure that when it is bustled, it is at least 1/2 to 1 inch off the floor.  That should take care of the issue of having it stepped on!

  • I have a trumpt style skirt and even with the bustle it is kind of poofy. I have a cute short dress that is white (I wore it to one of my showers) that I am bringing as a backup to our reception. It is outside in a tent and if it is raining or is unbeliviably hot, I figured I could change late at night to have something to continue to dance it. I got it at Ann Taylor for $60 and it is very flattering. It's totally up to you, but maybe you don't need to spend alot of money to have a backup. Could you find a simpler dress that you could take on a honeymoon for a night out?

My dress has the same sillhouette as yours, and I do think it'll be a little tricky to dance in, but I love the dress enough that I really want to wear it all night.  If you want to be doing salsa dancing or something all night, though, you may want to change.  But if you just want to be able to move around and dance I think you'll be fine if you keep the same dress!  Just make sure you're happy with your bustle.  Dresses like ours need to be bustled in more than one place (mine will have like 4 hooks on each side!)  That will keep it off the floor and reduce the risk of it ripping.  If your seamstress doesn't feel confident in her ability to bustle your dress so it won't get stepped on, maybe find a different seamstress.

I do have two dresses, but am also having two receptions! I will wear my long dress to the morning ceremony and brunch reception, then have made a tea length dress for the barn party in the evening, becasue you really can't wear a long white gown with a train and 4 inch heals at a barn party! Since I made the 2nd dress it wasn't very expensive, too. I would not have bought another full-priced wedding dress. I really love both dresses, and my phtogorapher is going to do a bride and groom photo session in both! I'm excited to have nice wedding portraits with two different by really awesome styles.

Try Zappos.com. You might find something less expensive, and they do free shipping both ways if you change your mind. Right now is free 1 day shipping, too!

  • I'm still debating a second dress.  I don't love, love my dress and I got it for a steal, so that's not motivating me not to change!  My plan (if I do a reception dress) is to use an online rental site, where you can rent from a huge variety of designers for a fraction of the purchase price.

I've heard of that, like renttherunway.com

There are also some inexpensive reception dresses on sale at davidsbridal.com
