Hair/Makeup

Alright, so hair and makeup is proving to be REALLY difficult where I am going to get married (like we're talking one company even quoted me $600 in travel fees difficult) so I have been debating doing it myself.

Makeup would be easy enough, we'd hit a MAC counter here, have them do it and show us how, and we have plenty of time to practice.

My concern is my updo... I know I want a full updo, here are the pictures of what I like:

Am I crazy? Do you think its doable? Anyone else doing this? How are you figuring out how to do the updo?
I cut and dye my own hair, so I'm sure an updo can't be THAT hard to learn...

Are any of your bridesmaids good at doing hair? I like those styles. I think you've got time to play around and see what you can do.

Personally, I SUCK at doing my own hair, so I would never attempt to do it myself. I always have flukes where it looks awesome, but then I can never replicate it. Maybe practice it a lot?

I think with practice I could do it, just not sure where to start in learning it...

I think with lots of practice anyone can do their own hair. Even with practice, have a back up plan. Try looking for videos on youtube. Like this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aaUs8avRAjc

Check youtube for tutorials. There are a TON! That's how I learned how to do retro/vintage hair!

IMO I think doing your own make up is fine, but hair is a bit too much. If you think you can do it, go for it! I just think you'll have so much going on and you'll want to remain as stress-free as possible. If something doesn't end up the way you want it and you are not able to fix it that could turn into unnecessary stress.

I second the bridesmaid thing, but there aren't any small salons near your ceremony site?

I am pretty good at doing my own hair, but I don't know if I would want to do it on the day of my wedding. I look back to FSILs wedding (I was a guest) and had a simple hairdo that I had done 10000s of times but for the life of me I could not get it to work because I was stressed getting FI there on time etc., because he was a groomsmen. Is there any way you could just get the hair done somewhere and do makeup yourselves? If not, practice practice practice! ... and have a backup plan

I'm a cosmetologist, and I would not recommend doing your own updo. It will be way too stressful the day of. I second trying to find a small salon to go to. Makeup is fine though.

If you have more ideas for pictures though or any questions, I can help you break them down. I do this a lot for my friends. How to cheat at getting the same looks etc.

Crazy chain of events.... one of my bridesmaid's mothers is coming... she's a single mother of a 3 year old so she figured having her mother there meant someone could deal with her child when she's getting ready, in the ceremony, etc...
I didn't want her mother to not know anyone, so I was willing to also have her bring a friend, even though my bridesmaid considers her mother her date... long story short the best friend she's inviting is a hairdresser, and my friend considers her like a family member. She was talking to her, and her friend is willing to do all our hair... FOR FREE... she apparently figures she can do that no problem seeing as we're covering her costs (she's travelling with the bm, they are driving, sharing their hotel and they aren't asking her to chip in, I'm including her in any of the meals I am covering for the bridal party and their dates, etc)
