Second Line Questions. HELP!

Ok I'm new at all this boards stuff. I have a few questions for brides that have done the second line. How much is it usually to do this? How many blocks? How long will we have that band for? Do they charge by the hour, or just a set price for the second line? I would like to do this, but I have no clue where to start. Thanks for any help!

Re: Second Line Questions. HELP!

  • Most bands will charge a flat fee for the second line. I would estimate somewhere between 20-40 minutes. The cheapest band seen on this board cost $500 and it was a 4 or 5 piece, they can get up to $800 depending on the band. You will also need a permit from the city, this costs $50 and a police escort which will run you $300. You can contact Sargaent Powers at the special events department of the NOPD to set that up.
  • logistically how does the second line band work with your pictures? did you just go take photos after? (Since bride and groom usually head up the second line?)
  • Based on what I have seen here on the boards and my own research, second line bands range from as cheap as $575 to an average of about $800 (that is what I am paying). This amount is for the time it takes for your second line (not by the hour, actually it will probably be alot less than an hour!). Mine is from the church to the reception, so they will be there as soon as we come out of the church, will be playing while we very quickly take group pics in Jackson Square (no pics allowed in Cathedral) as guests are coming out, then they will lead us to reception where their obligation ends. Most offered to continue playing during the cocktail hour for an additional small fee (maybe $100 or so). This is just the band fee. Don't forget you will need to pay for the city permit and police escorts too.

As far as distance, it totally depends on what you want and when you will do it (ceremony to reception, during switch from ceremony to reception set up if during same place, during reception around venue, after reception to nearby bar for after party...options are endless). Mine will be about 7 blocks from Cathedral to Wax Museum.

As far as when and how you take pictures, how long they play, etc. all of the bands I talked to on the phone were super friendly, very experienced, and willing to be flexible. Their attitude was to accommodate your specific wedding and they are pros and have done this hundreds of times.

  • Thanks so much! Both of yall were very helpful! I'm having my wedding and reception at the same place (Bourbon Orleans). Would yall recommend doing the second line after the ceremony or after the reception?
  • I'm at the Bourbon Orleans too :) Ceremony is at Cathedral....hmmmm that is sad no pics inside; the guidelines I have say that as long as the photographer doesn't interfere with the liturgy....or maybe you mean no pictures after the wedding. Interesting that they will often play during the cocktail hour as well...our second line will only take about 10 minutes since the Bourbon Orleans is so close, so maybe I can look into that as well.

Yes, I mean no pictures after the wedding with family or groups at the altar or in the church. We will quickly be doing group & family pictures in Jackson Square immediately after with the Cathedral in the background. For this reason, I am seriously considering doing a "first look" with FI since our pictures are going to be very rushed afterwards.

Just my opinion, but I think it depends on your guests and the type of crowd you will have. Doing it right after the ceremony could be good to get everyone going and excited for the reception. Or if you have a younger, more "lively" crowd, doing it after the reception is a good way to segue into an after party and end the reception with a bang. Don't think you can go wrong either way! :)
