Does original have to mean expensive?

Fiance and I have been looking around at different rings. I had some picked out but decided I didn't like the way we were treated and the service the jewelry store had. I want an original ring. not completely but something that not EVERYONE is wearing.... I seem to see a lot of the same rings while I help customers at my work. Are there any styles that are pretty but maybe not as popular or maybe somewhere that you can go online or otherwise to find something somewhat original that isn't horrendously priced? If I have to do boring to save money I will but everything seems the same...

Re: Does original have to mean expensive?

  • Have you considered a coloured stone? When thinking about rings I really liked the idea of a pale green or yellow sapphire. Sapphires are very hard and durable and are still very sparkly depending on the cut. I did end up with a diamond, however, but that was only because my FI had his great-grandmother's ring from the 1910s to give to me.

Non-diamond stones are also a lot less expensive than diamonds, so there's that as well. These are the sites I browsed a lot when I was looking at sapphire rings: http://www.thenaturalsapphirecompany.com/ (where you can create your own style of ring by choosing a stone and setting) and http://www.topazery.com/ (which has gorgeous antique and antique-style rings).
  • Try antique stores. I wanted more of a vintage wedding band, but it seemed all the stores were the same. I checked a local hole in the wall antique store and found one I loved for $100. I just got it appraised for 700.

  • Local jewelers, not chain stores, will have much more unique rings and can even custom make something. I agree with the suggestion of colored stone, or even a white sapphire instead of a diamond. That's what we did for my ring and we saved $1000!

  • For original I'd say try a kite set princess cut.  I tried one on and really liked its uniqueness.  That or try emerald cuts.  I don't see many of them.  They're not my favorite, but can be quite stunning.  What I see as most popular right now is halo settings.

This.  And OP--I notice you're in Columbus.  I recommend the Diamond Cellar or Leo Alfred for local jewelers! They're amazing.  I'm a bigger fan of Diamond Cellar, only because that's where my ring is from.<img src="http://cdn.cl9.vanillaforums.com/downloaded/ver1.0/content/scripts/tinymce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-laughing.gif" border="0" alt="Laughing" title="Laughing" />

I love the kite set princess cut rings.  One of my good friends has it and it's gorgeous, unique (yet not something a "custom design" that will up the price), and can be done on almost any setting.

  • I agree with PP about doing color stones or antique stores. My FH and I went to a local jeweler to custom make my ring. He gave them the price he wanted to spend and they sketched up a couple drawings. We didn't put money down until we picked up the ring.

  • are there any good antique stores in Ohio or Indiana to look? or even Michigan? I am not a big antique store person. always wanna go but never seem to find a good one around...
  • oh and my fiance was wondering about estate sales? has anyone had any experience with those?
  • I also reccomend a colored stone. This maybe out of your price range but I cant reccomend krikawa enough. If nothing less check out the designer cut stones and their settings. You could consider a spinel as well they are almost as hard as a sapphire but cheaper. They did a fantastic job with my ring: www.krikawa.com
