Neighbors

So we live in a house where there is an upstairs apartment. We had awesome neighbors before (considerate, friendly etc) but they were sloppy in the sense they left Christmas decor up and never cared about their yard. Whatever, we won't be here forever and that stuff doesn't matter to me. But they are moving out.

Anyway, we overheard a prospective conversation between the new people and our landlord. Our landlord detailed for them what we do for jobs, that we recently got a new car, that we have two dogs and that we are 35 (wtf? we are 27). I thought that was a bot odd for the landlord to share but again, whatever. Anyway, the new couple complained about the trash in our driveway (ummm it was from the old people moving out and we already called the landlord to clean it up bc we sure as hell weren't) AND told the landlord our dogs would have to go if they ever heard them barking. My dogs bark. Not out of control, but they are dogs.

Do I approach the landlord and nip this in the bud? Am I in for trouble neighbors? Does any one have good funny stories about scary neighbors to cheer me up?

[QUOTE]Sounds like they are going to be pains in the ass.  I would tell your landlord what you overheard, that your dogs have not caused any problems in the past and you don't anticipate any in the future.  <strong>I would also be sure to introduce myself to the new neighbors ASAP and also make mention of how long you lived there.</strong>  Obviously the landlord has no issues with you two and your dogs. During my last year of college, my roommate and I lived next to several members of the guys rugby team. They had parties all.the.time. Once they were doing keg tosses in the yard and hit our house. Another time my roommate asked them to keep it down because it was finals week. She was in her room and something was spraying in her window. One of the dudes was PEEING In her window. Her window was at an odd level somewhere between basement window and 1st floor land.

</div><div>Also, if PEE came in my window I would flipthefuckout. WHOA.

  • One time our neighbor stole our AC unit. It was in the communal storage. Sure we could have locked it up, But did she really think we wouldn't notice if one of the three apartments in the building had it in their window? Mike had to go up there and ask for it back. Awkward turtle.
  • Dude, it is NOT ok for your landlord to tell them all that stuff about you.  I'd be talking to him ASAP.  I would be PISSED.

<div>Most people are telling me this. I don't know why I am not more annoyed because you know this is usually the type of thing that pisses me off. Probably because they have been awesome landlords so I just keep things on a even keel.</div><div>
</div><div>What I am WAY more pissed at is the landlord not jumping in and saying it is not our trash. The couple kind of just kept going with more "expectations" so that got lost in the conversation. I am going to say something about that.</div>
  • Good luck with that.

We don't deal with crappy neighbors, and we seem to constantly have them.  That's one of my biggest fears for the house we just bought--that the neighbors will suck and we'll be miserable becaue of it.

Yeah, it would annoy me that they have so much information about you.

One of our neighbors lets her yappy dogs out at 1am. Seriously, these dogs will bark at leafs. There is maybe 8 feet between our bedroom and these yappy dogs, so they wake me up ALL THE TIME. It's not the dogs' fault, but it's really annoying. Especially when I have to be at work at 6am the next morning.

<div>I totally get their concern, don't get me wrong. I would be mortified if those were my dogs mentioned above. But yeah, they bark at the pizza delivery guy, so in this case I think there will be a problem. Now I kind of want pizza.</div>

  • The couple sounds like a pair of douches. I'll be honest, our apartment is small and expensive, but we never have to deal with noise or interact with our neighbours, and it's totally worth it to me. I lose my sh*t when people intrude on my space, even just with their voices.
  • Just sneak in there while its empty and leave them an upper decker.

<div>Oh, yeah, I wasn't trying to make a connection between your dogs and these dogs. There's a difference between you letting the dogs out and them barking in the afternoon or at the pizza guy, and this lady not caring if her dogs are going to wake people up. I'm sure you're a much more thoughtful neighbor. </div>

<div>Ours is actually really affordable. We deal with a lot of kids in the neighborhood and it drives me nuts, but in my county it is the least expensive, safe and clean rent I know of. I am SO getting a house soon on this rent, kwim?</div><div>
</div><div>But, you have to know you are not paying a lot being in my neighborhood and sometimes you deal with noise and people. My priority is saving and these people are already acting like they deserve a penthouse. You get what you pay for, assholes.</div>

Is there any way you can introduce yourself to them when theyre moving in and sort of break the ice and try to get off on a friendly footing in person so that they might be hesitant to be shitfaces about you to the landlord? that might work?

Imean, Id totally say something to the landlord too but it might help to talk to them too. Maybe they have had issues with really bad neighbors and its colouring their opinion of you guys.
  • I have this one neighbor that I can't stand.  I've never met the woman, but her voice is like nails on a chalkboard to me.  Have you ever watched Teen Mom on MTV?  This woman sounds like Jenelle's mom and yells just as much.  I can't wait to get an apartment that isn't in my FIL's basement.  Having sunlight again will be nice.

  • You're a better woman than me Meag - the nutsack off the truck would keep me from introducing myself.

Worst neighbor I ever had was an air marshall with a Napolean complex and a hobby of shooting birds in his back yard - often times off the block wall that ran between his back yard and mine so they'd land in my yard.  I confronted him several times and the day he actually shot a bird off my roof I lost it - told him to take his redneck games elsewhere and I might have said something about him having a tiny d!ck (oops).  He showed up the next day at my front door, wearing his gun, told me that he and his cop friends had ideas on how I could be dealt with.  Said he knew I lived alone and that he could easily see in my house from his upstairs windows.  I had to call the cops, install window locks, started having big loud guy friends over frequently for beers on the back patio...  Good times.

  • Let's try this again...

You're a better woman than me for trying to start off on the right foot with them - the truck balls would probably keep me from making the effort.

My worst neighbor was an air marshal with a Napoleon complex and a hobby of shooting birds in his backyard - often shooting them off the wall that ran between his yard and mine so I'd end up with dead birds in my yard.  I confronted him several times but the day he shot a bird off my roof I completely lost it - told him to take his redneck games somewhere else and I might have suggested he had a tiny d!ck (oops).  He game to my front door the next afternoon, wearing his gun, and told me that he and his cop friends had some ideas on how I could be dealt with, suggested he'd put me on TSA's watch list and that he knew I lived alone since he could see into my house from his upstairs windows.  So I had to call the cops, install window locks, lock up the dog door and start having large loud guy friends over for beers on the patio a lot.  I was not sad when I left that house.

  • I have never had the urge to talk to my neighbors while renting.  The last thing I want is for them to think we are BFF's and get all up in my sh!t, stopping by when they see I'm home or just knowing anything about me.  I completely ignore them.  It might be kind of bitchy, but I want to come home and relax... not deal with people that I don't really want to deal with and cant get away from.

  • Haha in my old apartment we had a shared driveway FI and I would shovel out our cars in the winter and the downstairs neighbors wouldnt, (they were lazy biatches!) only to have us come home from work and they are parked in our spots! Let me tell you that ended quickly after a few chioice words from me and my 6'6" FI showing up at their door. then the next set of downstair neighbors would play really loud emo music at 12am in the middle of the week. My favorite instance of this occuring my FI went down and knocked on their door to tell them to stop doing this we actually have jobs and need to be up in the AM, well they didnt even come to the door to talk to him, they just turned down the music and hid inside like scared little boys. SO dumb, they would also smoke pot all the time! so happy we moved out into our own home and dont have to deal with dumb people anymore haha

    Good luck!
