Not sure if its proper to add...

I am still working on my registry and saw a nice pair of toasting flutes and the cake knife and server.  Is it ok to add that to the registry?

People have mixed feelings about this since they are items usually used for the wedding itself.  I see it a lot and it doesn't bother me - but I also preferred to purchase my own instead of registering for them.

  • i think these are better spread by word of mouth to your mom/grandma/etc.

we actually had a couple family members tell us they wanted to buy them for us, and to go pick some out =)

I wouldn't b/c if you don't get them until the wedding day, then there isn't much  point.  Some people use them after the wedding, but if you're wanting them FOR the wedding, I think it is better a word of mouth thing. We got all of our gifts AT the wedding, nothing before.

  • We registered for them and received them before the wedding, used them at the wedding, and plan to continue using them (the serving set matches our other flatware and the champagne flutes are crystal, not wedding-specific). I think if we hadn't received them we would've just used the glassware and serving set that our venue provided.  Opinions vary but I think if these are things you will use in your married life that it's fine to put them on the registry (I did) but they really are 'extras' on your wedding day and you'll still be happily married without them.  Looking at a couple's registry I might not buy these items if they seem like they'll just be used once at the wedding reception (like the ones that say bride and groom), but I'm more practical then sentimental.  If you really want them just for your wedding day then I'd say just buy them yourself and leave them off the registry.
  • I had cake knives and a guestbook on my registry for around $50 a piece. When I found them for dirt cheap at a craft store I bought them and took them off my list. You can find them way cheaper than some of the registry stores are trying to make your guests spend.

  • Thank you for the input.  I think I may look around to buy myself but until then I may leave the ones I added on our registry.

  • Are you having a shower? My aunt got me our toasting flutes and my cousin got me the server set as a shower gift. Mine were non wedding specific though, just really nice, and I have a hutch to leave them in when I'm not using them. It was fun having nice flutes to toast with when FI got a promotion a month ago, and I like having a nice cake server around for entertaining.

I registered for mine and they were the first gifts purchased off my registry.  My shower is next Sunday and I've got a good feeling that they were purchased as a gift for my shower.

ETA: Mine also match my flatware set that I registered for and the toasting flutes go with the crystal I will inherit one day from my mom (not an exact match, but they have the same pattern essence so it blends in well).
