Tipping the Notary?

Hi all,

I just hired the officiant to perform the wedding ceremony. He is not affiliated with a church but he is ordained. His prices are $150. Is it proper to provide a tip on top of that? If so, how much?

We are doing the same thing and I probably won't be tipping him. He is getting paid $175 for 20 minutes of service. I think that's good enough.

You can always tip if you want, but it's not expected in this circumstance.

I'm going to assume he doesn't work with any company or organization, and for this purpose is self-employed?

If so, no, you don't need to tip him.

I think it all just depends on how you feel. I'm pretty much tipping everyone that is working for me. It doesn't have to be a HUGE tip... but, 10 or 20 dollars would be nice. Even though they may only be performing a 20 minute ceremony, they still have to prepare for it, travel to it, travel home, etc.

Most officiants or even notaries will spend some of their own time preparing for your ceremony... even if its just to make sure they remember your names.
