NWR: Heartbroken

So I'm sure you ladies remember me posting about working at the Super Bowl. It was the most incredible experience of my life and the people I worked with there were amazing. I was one of two freelancers there, the rest of the crew were their employees.

I ABSOLUTELY HATE my FT job... but I can't make a move into a new job now with the wedding flights already booked and a vacation in July booked. If I were to start a new job there's no guarantee that I'd get that vacation time so I need to wait until after to start the job search.

Well, when I was at the Super Bowl, the owner of the production company I was working for kept making comments about wanting me to work for them. When he drove me to the airport he actually said that we should move to Raleigh, NC or Los Angeles, CA (where their offices are located) and if Steve was willing to move they would love to hire me. He then continued to tell me about their benefits.

Daydreaming about working there has been all that's gotten me through these past few months.

They asked me to work the Final Four a couple of months ago and I had to turn it down because I couldn't take any more time off work.

Well, the other guy who was freelancing with them along with me at the Super Bowl went to the Final Four... and he just quit his job and moved to Raleigh to work with them.

I am so heartbroken. This is my absolute dream job, and it was almost real.

I'm just jealous you know what you want to do with your life! Another better opportunity will come around. When one door closes, another one opens!!

Aw, well maybe they have more than 1 opening? Honestly, if you hate your job so much, start the search now. It can take a while to find the right opening, and you can always negotiate the vacation upfront as part of your offer. Some of our good friends did just that in order to travel to our wedding...they negotiated in 2 weeks upfront in the first month, in addition to Christmas / Thanksgiving for 2011. It sounds like they like your skills enough to accommodate such a simple request.

Don't give up! If they really want you and you are meant to be there, it will happen. Have you talked to them about your vacation and wedding plans? Many employers are open to you already having plans if you let them know up front. Say, I would love to come work for you and am grateful for this opportunity, but I do have two previous obligations on blank and blank dates and in order to come work for you I would need to know that I would be able to honor these obligations just like I would honor my obligations to you. I've done this many times and it's always worked.

<div>It's not really an option with them because they would involve us relocating. So we'd need to move before I could work there, so FI would need to find a new job and we would need to rebook our flights (is that even possible?)</div><div>

I just talked to the guy who they just hired and he said that they mentioned me when he was talking to them about the job. It makes me feel a little better--we'll see.</div>

Wow. I just got a message from one of their producers saying that they hired the other guy against his wishes and I was number one on his list

Let's hope that they keep me in mind for the next time.

Oh no, I'm so sorry you had to miss out on this opportunity! However, give it some time, they were obviously very impressed by your work. Reassess in a few months and definitely keep in touch with the folks at your dream job and I'm sure somehow you can make it work. And yes, you can rebook your flights, it should just be $100 or $150 fee to change them. Follow your dreams girl, there are too many of us stuck in jobs we hate!

I agree. In the long run, don't let the little things, like flights or fear of moving/finding jobs, keep you from doing what you really want to do. Hopefully another chance will come along soon!

This! Once everything is settled after your wedding and AHR pour your energy and time into getting your dream job, you sound like you definitely have a great resume. I just did a personality assessment last night for homework and it gave me a list of fitting careers (none of which I ever thought I would do: I.e park ranger, psychologist & teacher!) and it said that "mundane office jobs" aren't a good choice and that's totally what i do, it makes me want to change my degree (business) and find a more fulfilling job!

You know, the other thing to consider is relocation assistance, temporary housing coverage, and spouse job support. Some companies will help you move, cover your expenses while you 'partially' move to the new city, and help with job searches, house hunting, shipping, etc. Not sure if those options are available to you, but it cannot hurt to ask.

You really need to look into this some more. Talk to them about your situation and how much you do want to come work for them. At the very least, you are laying the ground work for being able to work for them after the wedding. Plus, changing flights is so not a big deal. Many companies charge you nothing to do it, if you are doing it early enough. Just look into it!
