Car shopping - NWR

So I think I'm buying a new car.  Yikes!  I currently drive a 2007 Subaru Tribeca (SUV) and I'm looking at the 2013 Hyundai Sonata GLS.  It's the only car that catches my eye out there right now.

I'm a little skeptical about going from an SUV to a car, but the gas mileage should be enough to make me get over it!

Anyone drive a Hyundai Sonata and what do you like/not like about it?

Thanks!

  • H drives an Elantra. It is safe, affordable, gets great gas mileage, and is pretty comfortable, but IMHO, the engine sucks. Compared with my old Civic, it feels like driving a windup toy. If the Sonata has a better engine its probably fine, but that's my two cents. I am in a CRV and am thinking of downsizing, and so far, my favorite is the Mazda3.

  • Great things to consider - thanks!  FI was completely skeptical of a 4 cylinder because he's used to 6 and 8 but he drove it and was shocked since it had 200hp.  I was worried about it not having enough get up and go, but it really does go!

That dang maintenance!  I honestly had not thought about that aspect of it but like you said mainly true of most new cars under warranty.

Stage how many miles do you have on the car?  good to know that it was still running well at 100k.  I've never kept a car long enough to get there but I'm hoping this one I will want to keep for a long time.

Some people just want any car to drive, I am the type of person that has to love my car.  I get sentimental about getting rid of cars too.  What's up with that?  I'm going to miss the Subaru!  But I'll get over it!

  • I'd really recommend a Honda. I looked at Hyundai when I was buying a new car after my ten years with my New Beetle, but I decided on Honda because my boyfriend spoke so highly of his Honda Civic (which he sold at 20 years old, had 250,000+ miles on it, and still ran like a dream) and so far, I've been incredibly pleased with my Honda Fit. We're looking at upgrading his 1998 Oldsmobile Eighty-Eight next year and we'll probably be getting another Honda.

  • Keep in mind, if you go from a Subaru to a Hyundai sedan, you'll also be losing all wheel drive.

I have a Honda Civic that I've driven for 7+ years and 100,000 miles.  I love the car and it's reliability, but I don't love how it drives in the snow.  My next car will be a Subaru.  FI has an Impreza and I feel so much more comfortable driving his car in bad weather.

  • I'm also car shopping, i was stuck on the new Malibu since my older 06 malibu is really good and reliable but Hubby wants the new Hyundai Genesis Sedan. We rented a Sonata a few years ago and it drives incredibly smooth. It really changed my mind about Hyundai. reading the previous posts that they can be pretty reliable makes me consider one now. :) G.L.
  • Fi and I both have Toyota sedans. His has 110K and mine has 70K and they both run like a dream.

That said, we are both car from A to B people, so we didn't really look around. If it has a good name, runs well, and isn't an obnoxious color, we're good.
