Small cake for bride and groom, dessert for guests? Weird?

Hi,
I am trying to cut back on costs and my vendor makes us use their baker. The cake is $20-$30/slice. Dessert is included in the meal price or you can save $3.person and skip the dessert. The dessert options are White chocolate mousse dome or flourless chocolate cake. We are having 125 people. What are people's thoughts on only having a small wedding cake for the bride and groom to cut and eat and serving the dessert to the guests. Would people think it is weird to not be served the wedding cake? Thanks so much!

  • I'm with Duds. And dang, that must be SOME cake they have!

  • The cakes don't even look that great on the menu but I am sure when we have our tasting next month we will think they were delicious. I think that it is how the venue gets you...alcohol and cake......

  • I too think it sounds a little weird to have cake for just the two of you and not everyone.  And dang, the most I've seen here in Seattle per slice is $6, and I can't even imagine paying that much.

I would find it odd if you guys cut a cake (and then ate slices of it), but guests didn't get to eat any.   And I don't even like cake.  Plus, $20-30 PER SLICE is highway robbery.  The smallest cake you could feasibly buy to cut for just you would probably be a 10-slice cake, and there's no way I would spend $200-300 on a cake that small (FWIW, we were able to get 120 gourmet cupcakes AND our entire dessert bar for less than your one little symbolic cake would cost)

  • I think it would be weird to have a cake cutting and then not be served wedding cake.  If you want to cut something, can you just feed eachother from a piece of one of the offered desserts?
  • $20-$30 per slice!  Are you freaking kidding me?!?!  What the hell kind of cake are they making?  Are they using 24K gold flower with 3K diamonds sprinkled about?

But besides the pricing (crazy), it would be weird if just you and the groom cut a small cake but didn't serve any cake to your guests.  It would be like dangling a carrot in front of a horse to make it move, but once it does you laugh in its face and eat the carrot yourself.

<div>Wow, hopefully that is a typo!  When we looked at cake bakers, I didn't even see anything for more than $5 a slice.  If I were in your shoes, I would eat the same dessert as the guests.</div>
  • Serving another dessert is fine, but like some PPs said, I would wonder why only the bride and groom got a cake and I didn't.  Expect for others to mention that to their tablemates also.
  • They have a chocolate cake as the dessert that we would serve to the guests. It is crazy that they have people pay that for cake. My sister in law's cake was $9/slice and we thought that was crazy. I really want to cut a cake...would people know their chocolate cake didn't come from the wedding cake we just tasted? They won't let us keep the dessert they are serving in cake form..otherwise I would cut that...I really want to have the picture of a cake (even if its a four person cake) cutting. Any suggestions?

Who is this baker and is cake dusted in gold and platinum!?!?

Skip the cake all together and just use the desserts that the guests have.  If you show a cake, you need to serve some cake.

  • I am serving chocolate cake as a dessert......Is that not sufficient?

The cake is from Pebble Beach, where you are required to use their baker.
  • I think it's fine to do a small cutting cake and then serve whatever dessert you want.  In that case, the cake cutting is just a symbolic tradition.  My sister did this and then served whoopie pies and no one batted an eye.

  • Totally fine!  We did cupcakes for everyone else and a small cake for us to cut, eat, and save a piece for our one year anniversary.
