Is anyone else risking it and going to Carribean during Hurricane Seaon?

My FI and I really want to go to Barbados for our Honeymoon. We are getting married Sept 7th and want to go the week following the wedding....which is right in the midst of hurricane season! I know there is always travel insurance just in case but I would hate for it to not work out after getting so excited to go... Is anyone else just risking it and going for the Carribean during hurricane season? Or has anyone been in Sept and can give some advice/ peace of mind? Thanks!

  • We went to Mexico in September and it was gorgeous. The weather was perfect and the resorts and touristy areas were not very busy which was great for us! I think it just depends on how comfortable you feel. Hurricanes are very un-predictable but the chance that on that one week you will be there that a hurricane will hit is very unlikely. And in the once in a lifetime chance it might happen, have the insurance. Otherwise I would say go for it and have a great time!

  • I've traveled to the Caribbean a ton of times during hurricane season and I know there are a ton of girls on here who are planning to do so as well. Yes, there is a chance that one may pop up but if it happens to hit around Barbados (which doesn't tend to be quite as common as other areas), it may affect the island for 3-4 days out of the 6 months of the season. I would not put off what you want to do because of it and as you are already aware of, buy the trip insurance.

    I 2nd this.

  • We've gone to the Caribbean twice during hurricane season. We were in St. Martin when Sandy hit our area in NY actually, so it was quite ironic - we were fine in the hurricane-prone Caribbean, yet our home in NY was getting pounded by a storm. We were "stuck" there an extra 3 days, but our wonderful travel insurance took care of all the expenses we incurred those 3 days.

  • I knew a girl who went on to Anguilla for her HM in the month of October.  A small hurricane hit the day after they arrived.  Out of the 7 days they were there only 2 were a wash.  They still had a great time and the weather was perfect the last 5 days.

Just remember that yeah hurricanes can happen but so can regular old thunderstorms.  Heck it can rain the entire time you are there.  You can't control the weather so you just have to learn to go with the flow.  All I can say is to purchase travel insurance just in case.

  • Thanks everyone for your input! I think we are going to go for it! You're right we can't control the weather so if it rains i'll just enjoy a rum punch indoors :)

<div>Yes it was! The day before we left, all of the computer models had the storm going out to sea except for 1, which had it hitting NY. Guess that one was right! We were very lucky and our home was totally fine. </div>
